Water and eating

I'm just starting research and I have a question that I haven't seen addressed yet so I figured I'd ask here. I know you aren't supposed to drink water for 30 minutes before and after eating. Is this the case indefinitely or just your first 2 years post op?

forever     your sleeve will always be small and if you drink with or before eating there will not be room for enough   food to keep you healthy and if you drink right after eating you flush the food out of your stomach and get hungry quicker

My surgeon says stop drinking before your first bite of food.  They say the liquid passes through.  After viewing my leak test, I agree.

You can read up on the pyloric valve at the link below.

This will help you understand how things work..... "basically".

My NUT disagrees about not drinking beforehand, but the not drinking 30-60 minutes after eating is forever.

Seriously - this advice is for RNY.  Sadly, the bundle us all into the same folder.  In a RNY pouch, there is no control to hold food in the pouch, so any liquids flush the food out and leaves the patient hungry again.  The plyoric valve in a sleeve stomach controls the exit of food to the digestive system.  If 'some' flushes out with drink, you won't be left hungry like with the RNY because of our lack of grehlin, and the flushing isn't as complete as with a pouch.

That being said, a stomach full of fluid cannot hold much food, so you should give a few minutes for drink to exit the stomach before you start eating, drink sparingly while eating if you must just to keep from getting too full too fast.

I never have understood this.  I have had water with food and not.  I sip.  I feel no difference during or after.  Im not worried that im not getting enough dense protein to hold me over.  I feel the exact way with or with out.  Im always hungry 3 hours after eating.

For me, drinking after I eat is just uncomfortable since my stomach is full - adding more stuff into my stomach at that point doesn't feel great.  I'm happier to let things digest for a bit before drinking.
