Hi everyone. I just started getting heartburn today so I called my surgeon and they suggested getting some omeprezol. (Prilosec). So I went and bought some and areas that for one I can't take it until morning, and for two, it could be up to 4 days before I get any relief. :( do you know if there is anything more fast acting that I can take tonight. I know time are out of the question for whatever reason, and I can't drink enough milk for it to really help.(my sleeve is still very very tight) HELP?!?!?

Prevacid is what works quickly for me.

A word of caution and I don't mean to scare you...be very careful with the reflux particularly if you are still taking pain medication. I was having bad reflux in the days after my surgery and was taking heavy doses of Percoset at night to help me sleep. At some point, probably while I was sleeping too soundly because of the Percoset, I aspirated on acid. A few days in, I was being rushed to the hospital in lung failure and spent the next three days in the hospital and six weeks recovering from pneumonia. The odds of aspiration pneumonia are slim but I'm here to tell you it really can happen! Good luck!

I slept propped almost straight up for 2 weeks after surgery even though my doctor had given me prescription Prilosec. I didn't know we couldn't have Tums, why is that?

I was allowed to take TUMS..  It was how I got my calcium in until I was 6 weeks out and able to switch to calcium citrate.  You should call and ask your surgeon first but that's what worked for me.

I had a lot of acide with my band very ofter before I converted to a sleeve. I used to take one omeprazole morning and  one at night and when it got really bad ( my band was too tight) I had to sleep with 3 pillows to keep the acid from coming back up.

Why are TUMS out of the question?  My doctor had me taking sugar-free TUMS from Day One - thank god cuz my acid reflux was HORRIBLE and I was allergic to Prilosec and Zantac.  I ended up having to go on Protonix and still take 20 mg a day.

Unless your doc specifically forbade TUMS, you can take them.  You can't use them as your calcium supplement, but they still work fine as an antacid.  I used Pepcid a/c post-surgery for a few months.  Never needed anything stronger.  It'll take care of the immediate heartburn issue and last longer than TUMS.
