MENOPAUSE AND VSG SURGERY
I had my surgery a year ago when I was 59. I am post menopausal. I have lost 128 lbs so far. I went through menopause when I was around 52. If your stay on plan, eat low carbs, low sugar and high protein, you should lose. I see younger people lose faster or more, it didn't bother me. I just feel blessed to have had the surgery. I am still loosing at this point. Everyone is different and what works for some, may not work for all. Men loose easier without having to cut way down on carbs. I learned long time ago that carbs are my enemy. After years of dieting, I know what does work for me. Although I am an expert at what works for me to lose, I never could become an expert at keeping the weight off. This surgery has allowed me to eat as I should, small portions, and not stay hungry every waking hour. This is what the difference is for me.
I was 64 when I had surgery and post menopause and I've been very successful. I started at 385 and now weigh 157. I suspect you will do fine.
best wishes,
Carol

Hi Bonnie,
Its nice to meet someone who is doing surgery over 60, as I did. My surgery was so easy. I had very little pain, no nausea (thanks to the many anti-nausea meds I asked for) and no serious gas pain. I was so worried and it was such a non-event. The strongest pain med I needed was Tylenol. I did feel like I had the flu for about three days. I had a nasty head ache and was tired and achy. And I was tired for weeks after surgery and napped a lot. But all in all, it was all very manageable.
Neither my NP or my surgeon made any comment about my age. They didn't seem to have any concerns. There is a woman in my local support group that was over 70 when she had the surgery and they told her that in most cases, it works out fine with older patients. Their only concern is that if there are complications, it can be harder on older patients. But she did just fine, also.
I wish you every success in your weight loss journey.
best wishes,
Carol

I had my surgery at 61, last November and I have lost 80 of the 90 lbs I want to lose. It's the best and smartest thing I have done for myself. I look and feel better at 62 than I did at 42. Be sure to incorporate exercise in your plan, be aware that FAST loss is not better than slow loss. A loss is a loss, be patient. Not everyone loses fast.
Good luck- you can do it and you will be so glad you did!
Hi Tracy. Apologies for late reply. Thank you for sharing. you guys have been super encouraging. Where I am in, weight loss surgery seems taboo. The mindset it overweight people are too lazy to work out! This forum has been my lifeline. My doc has rescheduled by surgery to 2 Feb 2015. Nervous, excited but looking forward to WLS. Thanks again for reply. God bless.
