What guidelines do you follow Calories/Protein/Carbs/Water ?

I had my VSG 3 weeks ago.  Still in pureed stage.  I am determined to use these early months wisely.  My doc gave me a water 60+oz) and protein goal (75-93g) but that's it.....

I am interested in hearing from those who have been successful.  What guidelines did you follow regarding intake of Calories/Protein/Carbs/Water?  Did they change over time? Were there any other statistics you monitored or controlled?  I appreciate your sharing your success.

early out -

  1. calories - 600 to 800
  2. protein - 80 to 100
  3. carbs - under 25
  4. water - 64 ounces - though I only could get about 48 ounces down in a day

Later - I found I needed more calories per day to sustain, increasing to about 800 to 1000 per day by 6 months, and 1000 to 12000 by one year.  The other goal levels didn't change.

best wishes,

Carol

Carol,

Thanks for responding!  The carbs seems sooo low to me.  What can you eat besides meat and cheese?

Your best bet is nothing but lean protein and possibly some dairy. Chicken, cheese, sausage, yogurt, etc.

Nothing starchy, maybe a nibble of veggie, but only after you've had protein.

I had to keep my carbs very low because I am very sensitive to carbs.  If I have too many, it triggers food cravings for me and then its all over.  Now in maintenance I allow myself more carbs occasionally, but I often end up back fighting the cravings and needing to go cold-turkey cutting them out again.

When I'm aiming at 25 grams per day, all my carbs come from dairy and low-carb veggies like broccoli and cauliflower.  I don't eat any potatoes, rice, breads or deserts. (sigh)

When I'm in maintenance, I allow myself small servings of squash, sweet potatoes, humus, beans, etc.  I get in trouble when I start eating crackers, breads, or deserts.  But I do give in occasionally.

best wishes,

Carol

Carol,

Sounds like great advice!  I think I am also carb sensitive. When you sent this I had hummus and sweet potato in the frig in little one ounce containers - threw them out - probably why I get so hungry - which has been confusing because I hear so many people say they have to remind themselves to eat.

I think she is meaning net carbs...subtract carbs from fiber and get the net carbs.   Otherwise you would never get a vegetable :)

I always wondered what they meant by net carbs!

Thanks for clarifying!

Net carbs are a trap. A way to pretend you are eating fewer carbs than you think you are. Especially in processed foods, like protein bars. Do yourself a favor, and don't go down the net carb rabbit hole. Most "fiber" in foods acts the same as other carbs. Most of that fiber actually acts most like sugar, and will spike your blood sugar and insulin.
