So, my surgery date is may 23rd, assuming insurance approves- which I should  know this week (knock wood)

I know we're all different, but I'd love to hear from anyone with similar 'specs' as me...like  most, I've battled me weight forever. Diets work, then they dont. I've never really exercised....although I try to walk as much as I can anywhere. I have 3 kids, and a ft desk job. I consider myself to have a superslow metabolism but have never been formally diagnosed with anything.

I plan on having a calorie intake of 600-800 (?) and I'm fine with high Protein, low carb... when I did medifast I was the the most successful. I felt really in control too.

Any experience and advice is really appreciated! I'm trying hard to stay positive/excited- and not nervous!

I had my surgery at 39 about to turn 40, was 288 lbs before the pre-op and 5'6" (I am now 41).  I am down 110 lbs so far and would like to lose another 15 or so, but am having trouble losing the last 15.  I admit that it is likely because of eating enough calories for maintenance, so it is of my own doing.  When I decide to buckle down, I will make it to goal.  I do not regret the surgery for one minute and wish I had down it sooner.  I work a desk job too and also need to make sure I get more exercise.  Good luck to you on the approval and hopefully upcoming surgery.

I'm a bit taller and I started quite a bit heavier, so my numbers won't be so relevant.  But I can say I went from a BMI of 60 to a BMI of 24.  You can get to a normal BMI if you make a long-term commitment to stick with the program.

My experience, YMMV:

I was 31 on surgery day, 5'5, 285lb. I got down to 145 in one year. High protein, low carb, cycling once or twice a week and taking walks on my lunch break.

Your surgeon can probably give you a better prediction based on your medical history.

In my opinion, almost any goal you're going to set for yourself in the healthy BMI range is attainable - it just depends on how hard you want to work and hard much you want to "sacrifice" for lack of a better term. Meaning, we have to think about what is reasonable/attainable/sustainable/healthy for each of us. Could I get down to, say 160? Sure. I could... but am I willing to work that hard? Probably not.

Some people also don't like the way they look at lower weights and find it hard to maintain. It's a good idea to talk to your doctor about what kind of weight range will keep you at optimum health because that's really what it should be about - and then go from there.
