CPAP Question!

Alright y'all, wisdom me up! Time for another noobie question!

I've been using a CPAP since 2004, and I've never had trouble keeping mymouth shut during sleep and don't think I have this problem now.

That said, 5 out of past 5 mornings, I wake with the mask on, mouth closed, and so dry inside that I actually feel the flesh /inner-mouth-bits peel apart. Dry as the sahara... So dry even a mummy would be like, "Girl, drink some danged water." before agreeing to engagea second time with my parched pucker.

At my last sleep study, I was about 85 lbs higher weight,  is horrific dry mouth a symptom that the pressure is too high?

I know they switched mine to variable levels.....so that may help.  It was also time for a new machine for me . . . so the new machine was set that way.

I am using my old machine temporarily and I notice that I am pretty dry mouthed.  It is still set at a constant rate, so I would talk to your physician and see what they would recommend.

Also, I did a recent at home sleep study for my oxygen level and my level still is not anywhere good enough to stop using my cpap.  Alas, it looks like being obese had little to do with my sleep apnea.... d***!

I tried the self-titrating CPAP a couple of months ago, but it did not work for me. I couldn't get into the breathing rhythm or something.

Might need to go for another sleep study before the weight has come off, even though we'd decided presurgery to wait. That dry mouth situation is the pits!

Did your pressure level change at least? Are there now positions you can sleep in without apnea episodes? I fell asleep on my side on the couch for two hours the other day and suffered no I'll effects(usually I awaken immediately because the apnea throws me headlong into afib, which is better at waking me than an alarm!)

It sounds like you are getting blow by because of weight changes.  I just had an adjustment to my settings for the second time.  I called for an appointment and they adjusted it to a lower range. Congrats on the 85 pounds.

Thank you! Only 25 since surgery, and I can never figure out where to count from(highest weight:-119#, start of bariatric program: -89, or surgery weight: -25)...

I know nothing about CPAP machines, but are you getting enough fluids?  Dry mouth is common if you are becoming dehydrated.   Right after surgery I would wake up in the mornings with a dry mouth just as you described (and I have never used a CPAP machine).  It could be that you are dehydrated from going 8 hours withou****er.  You are early out from surgery and are probably not meeting the 64 ounce minimum requirement.

Just keep drinking!

I am constantly fighting dehydration and haven't gotten two 64 once, so I'm sure this plays a part. But at the height of myworst dehydration, this mouth situation wasn't happening.

Really looking forward to the day drinking gets easier!!

I agree with Rocky, I believe it is dehydration.  I use a CPap and I have noticed a huge problem with dry mouth upon waking the last couple of weeks.  I am on day 13 of a high protein extremely low-carb 800 calorie sugar-free liquid fast Pre-op diet, and I have been drier than a covered bridge since almost day one!  A high protein low-carb diet is extremely dehydrating, which is why our Doctors are so adamant about us drinking water.  I am on 2 BP meds, and one is a water pill.  My surgeon told me that once I have surgery, I am not to take the water pill again after.  I have found that after 7-8 hours sleep with no water intake, that it takes several hours of drinking water in the AM to try to recover.  I understand now why my surgeon told me not to wait until I am thirsty after surgery to drink, because by then I am already dehydrated.  I am wishing you all the best in your recovery!  I know you have had a really tough go of it.  Hang in there!  I am pulling for you and I am sure there are many others here that are too!

I'm only eating yogurt's today in the hopes I can get more fluids in... It's both another bad day. I just really though of be doing much better by now. Like... At least conquering the drinking!

Thank you for your response And we'll wishes, I hoped your surgery is smooth sailing.

I used to work in a sleep lab, albeit 15 years ago so the tech has really changed. Yes, the weight loss could absolutely change the titration of your machine. There are humidifiers that we used to be able to add to the machine as well, so not sure if that is an option. Also, it does seem feasible that you are opening your mouth so a chin strap may help. Best bet, if insurance covers it get rechecked.
