I Miss My Oatmeal (cross post)

Do you eat oatmeal? I like oatmeal and miss it on cold winter mornings. My last taste was about 6 weeks post-op. I was in a hurry and ordered the classic oatmeal from Starbucks. 30 minutes later I regretted every bite. I think it was my first dumping episode. I posted something here and there were a couple of things that may have contributed my discomfort. 1. Too early for carbs and too many carbs in the Starbucks oatmeal and 2. Too much sugar in the Starbucks oatmeal. Now at 7 months post-op and winter in full swing I'm thinking about trying oatmeal again. Only this time I will make it at home and add my protein powder to it. I see on Bariatric Foodie some recipes for baked oatmeal and regular oatmeal. Any suggestions? Steel cut vs rolled? There are 5-6 gram of protein in the oatmeal and with the added protein powder I could get about 25-30 grams, get my fiber in and be full all morning. Or should I just stay away from oatmeal?

Carpe Diem!

I am 2.5 years out and have not had any oatmeal, but then...I was never a fan of it. ( Same goes for popcorn. Don't miss it at all. )

Honestly, I say stay away until you are at goal.

My deep, dark secret is out. I am not a fan of popcorn.

My sons can come home from school, make a big ol' bag of extra, super buttery microwave popcorn...and I don't bat an eyelash.

Let the ( Quest ) chips fall where they may.

I answered this on the other forum but I wanted to add that when I did have it I made sure to count it towards my carb limit, which early out was 50 grams a day.

Hey Friend,

I want to follow up on what Audrey said. I have PCOS and am very carb sensitive.  My experience has been that I could stall my weight loss and even GAIN weight eating 0.5 steel cup oats (made with honey and gala apples) and ONE piece of bread per day (for a fold over sandwich).

Notably this was at the time in my weight loss phase when I was going gangbusters with the exercise (i.e. 2 hours per day-1 hour bodypump/weights 2 x's per week and an hour cardio OR 2 hours cardio).

So, if you have any hormone imbalances I wouldnt recommend it...because my experience has been one cant out exercise their hormones/diet and that wasnt even a "bad" diet!!! (i.e. I could have been eating crackers, white bread, potato chips!!!).

Because I also had a bad experience with a cup of hot oatmeal on a cold winter morning, I haven't looked at oatmeal the same since.  However, it wasn't the oatmeal, rather the pure maple syrup drizzled on top that was the culprit. Yes, should have known better but was thinking natural things like maple syrup were somehow okay--not.  FYI:  unjury.com sells oatmeal protein packets you might want to request the company to send you a sample.  (Unjury protein powder is my favorite to use in homemade smoothies)  My main use for old-fashioned oatmeal these days is throwing a handful in a recipe for homemade peanut butter protein balls. As to your question to stay away from oatmeal?  We are suppose to ask ourselves three questions when choosing a food to eat.  1.  Is it a protein?  2.  Is it a vegetable?  3.  Is it an occasional fruit?  If the answer if no, then rethink your choice.   Easy to remember, harder to do.
