My pre-surgery appointment is in 2 weeks and my surgery is exactly a month away. I need to go grocery shopping today. I have a couple large containers of chicken broth already. I am going to buy the following in prep for the pre-op diet, can you give me other suggestions?

  • Sf jello
  • More broth
  • Sf Gatorade or Powerade
  • Almond milk for shakes (need to check with NUT because she might want them made w/water instead)
  • Unflavored protein powder to put in broths

This pre-surgery diet is going to he a HARD two weeks for me LOL. I am prone to hunger headaches and grumpiness with lack of food/nutritiion... But if others have endured, I know I can too.

Sugar free Popsicles are also a great addition.

Tina, how did you use the timer? Did you set it for like a half hour and then you eat slow enough to finish 2 ounces before the timer went off? I have a timer somewhere, i will have to hunt for it. That is one of the  things I have not mastered yet, eating slower; the other is chewing longer.

I also mix my shakes with almond milk and I get the unsweetened original for less sugar and carbs.  I also bought SF pudding for my pre op diet because it was nice to have something a little thicker.

I am also prone to hunger pains and headaches but as long as you follow the pre op instructions completely, you shouldn't feel any different.  You may think you're hungry but the shakes are actually giving you the proper nutrition you need.  Just make sure to drink plenty of water and take your vitamins as well.  Good luck!

Thanks for the info, well wishes and ideas guys. I got some of the stuff listed plus some decent measuring cups, baby spoons and 4 oz rubbermade containers. The principal I work with had the sleeve several years ago and told me he is giving me a flat food scale and some 4 oz containers.

I think I am going to wait until closer to the 9th, which I think will be when I have to start the thin liquid diet, before I buy my sf items. I am going to email my NUT to find out if I need to use water in my shakes instead of almond milk for the 2 weeks, whether or not i can eat sf puddings and yogurt, and how many calories I am supposed to be getting daily for the 2 weeks. I don't want any setbacks or reschedule!

Just a quick note about the almond milk: My NUT advised against it, because it has very little protein. See what yours says.

Meg, I just emailed her asking if during the 2 week preop she wants the shakes made with almond milk or water. Awaiting her answer. I noticed there wasn't much protien but there is tons of calcium. Although I don't care for  cows milk, I guess I could drink it if I had to. So I hope she gives the OK for almond milk.

My NUT wanted me to use cow milk because of the protein, but I don't want the carbs that cow milk come with - I'd rather get my carbs from tastier sources.  I don't have a problem reaching my protein goal using almond milk.

I noticed that cows milk is high in carbs too, even the fat free cows milk has quite a lot of carbs. I heard soy milk has a lot of estrogen in it so I don't want to mess with that, I am moody enough LOL. I have been drinking the almond milk for a while now and it mixes up well with the protein powder.
