Hello!  New to the forum - trying to get accurate information on self pay VSG without leaving the US.  My insurance does not cover any bariartric services, so I am trying to find up to date information on surgeons with self-pay options!

Would love advice, testimonials, what not to do, etc.

Thanks for your time!

I know that you can get a Health Credit Card, i think it's called Care Credit.

Hope that is helpful.

Can you switch to an insurance that covers wls? it might be cheaper than trying to go the self pay route, even though it'll take longer to get the surgery. Heard some insurance companies will not force you to be with them for a certain amt of time b4 they'll cover the surgery, only for you to do whatever their requirements are. Surgery in the us can be pretty pricey & you need money for aftercare too.

No one surgery is better than the other, what works for one may not work for another. T-Rebel

There are many places in the US that will work with self pay. I am a self pay patient myself. Here are some things to look for:

1. Ensure price quoted is all inclusive. (Consults, surgeons fees, hospital stay, anesthesia, pre op diet, follow ups, complication insurance, etc.)

2. Account for a little bit extra expense if you want full coverage complication insurance. (most require only minimal coverage), also fees may be higher for higher BMI patients (patients with a 60 BMI can probably expect $2000 more than someone with a 40 BMI)

3. Find a center of excellence.

4. Know your surgeon's credentials.

5. I recommend finding the closest possible surgeon you feel comfortable with, long drives and airplane rides can increase the risk of DVT.

I am scheduled to have surgery 11-6 with Dr. T Ryan Heider at The Center for Surgical Weight Loss at Lake Norman, in Mooresville, NC his all inclusive package for VSG starts at $11,900, I had my consult with him Monday and I am thoroughly impressed!

Expect a $14,000 to $18,000 price range.  This may vary by geographic market but probably won't be much cheaper.

There are sometimes cheaper bariactric surgical options available from the same surgeon that aren't the VSG.  Stick to the VSG regardless of pricing; don't go for any of the cheaper options, they bring up issues.
