Ok so my cousin is getting married July 2015. She wants to go find bridesmaid dresses next weekend. I'm only 3 months post op (down 67 lbs, by the way!) but by the time of her wedding I'll be 11 months post op. My 3 month post op body will (hopefully) be different than my 11 month post op body. What do I do?

Can they tailor things like down like 2 or 3 sizes?? I've never had anything tailored before. Or been a bridesmaid for that matter.

Yup!  You might want to buy it a size smaller to begin with. But I'd probably just rely on a good tailor.

You could also find the dress that the bride likes now and wait to actually buy it until the wedding is closer.

Is it possible to get the dress and then have it fitted closer to the wedding date?

Bridesmaid dresses shouldn't need a 8 month notice. I'd find out what the minimum order time is and weight until that time to select yours.  Is she selecting styles or just color. I'm 9.5 months out and I'm 5'4" moving into a size 10 you're 10 lbs lighter than I was starting out. I would never have imagined a size 10! So go lower than you think if you have to pick it out now

I say find out the latest date you can order and go back for a fitting then. They give you a really hard time when you want to order smaller than you are. Will probably make you sign papers saying they are not responsible.  Ask if they can alter a dress 4 sizes down. Good luck. That's one of my goals is to go to a wedding not being fat!!!

Don't forget that dresses like that run smaller too. So even if your pants are a 10 the dress may be a 14.

HiI am having my surgery in 9 days, I am actually getting married in March and both my bridesmaids are losing weight - one has lost 27kg since we got engaged 6 months ago.  I have so far lost 6kg on my pre-surgery diet.  for my wedding dress I explained my situation and the dressmaker has kindly given me a 6week time frame before the wedding for my final measurements.

With my bridesmaids we are considering everything including off the rack dresses.  Does your cousin know that you have just had surgery?  Depending on what you fit on and what type of dresses they have you could have a lot of options.  Get fabric samples and get something made that is very similar but from a dressmaker that is able to wait.  Maybe they will choose a dress but only order it later?  You can still have fun trying things on, just try to be more open minded about shapes and styles for your slimmer body.

Here in Australia, Wedding dresses are usually ordered minimum 6 months before but bridesmaid can wait till 3 months.  She may just want to finalise shapes and styles or even  just pre-book a slot with the company or dressmaker you will use, and you won't need to get measured up till much later.

The other thing I would do is start to really track weight and measurements - say weekly or fortnightly your losses size wise especially may fall into a pattern, if you can chart them with a trend line, you may be able to make a best guess at what size you will be - then I would order the dress slightly bigger than your guesstimate size and get a tailor for the final alterations.

Try to enjoy the dress fitting and choosing day as much as you can without worrying and then find out what options you have depending on the choice!

If you're helping her shop for dresses, these are key questions you need to be asking when taking dresses into consideration.

How long does it take to be ordered?

How much can be taken in? (some have a limit before they just don't look right)

You'll want to wait until the last minute to order yours, for you're in for so many changes between now and the day you'll be wearing it.
