Husband will have VSG a week after my RNY

My husband is scheduled for his VSG the week after I'm scheduled for RNY (my mom is staying with us for 2 weeks to help out while we recover). What differences can we expect in our recoveries from the two different procedures? Our surgeon's eating plan is identical for VSG and RNY patients, but obviously the procedures are technically very different, so I imagine we will have different experiences from that (on top of us just being two different people). Anyone have any words of wisdom? (I'm cross-posting this too to get opinions from both groups.) Thanks!

His recovery may be a bit easier than yours.

We had our VSG's a year apart, my husband is 9 years older and diabetic - and so far his recovery has been easier than mine was.  He was able to stay more hydrated faster, had less need for pain meds, no nausea either.

It is hard to predict - but hopefully both of you have textbook smooth operations and easy recoveries.  Good Luck!

Why different procedures?

I was planning on the sleeve as well, but the surgeon recommended RNY for me instead because of my severe GERD.

Hello, my husband had RNY one year before I had the VSG (I called him the guinea pig :)).  We had basically the same recovery.  Except, he jumped right into walking (which he was not used to) and I remember him pulling a muscle in his leg, and instead of babying it, he kept walking.  So basically that was the only difference.  Best wishes to you both in your new lives!!! You will be amazed at the different lifestyles you will have!!

That's great to hear, thank you! We've already upped our activity level and are having so much fun going on hikes with our dog every weekend, but we're topping out on the amount of weight we can lose on our own, so I hope WLS will make an even bigger impact. I've heard a lot about "bariatric divorce," but our relationship has improved a lot with the efforts we've already made to improve our health, so I'm hopeful doing this together will prevent us from becoming another statistic.

Good luck to you both - what a wonderful new life you will share opening up so many possibilities!
