How long were you in the Hospital??

I know every hospital and surgeon is different but I'm curious as to how long each of you were kept in the hospital after VSG? I'll be resubmitted for insurance soon and I'm trying to mentally prepare myself for surgery. Some say they go home the day after but some say they had to stay up to 3 days. What was your experience? A friend of mine just had acid reflux surgery and went home the next day, you'd think with VSG you'd have to stay at least until the second day after surgery? I live over 3 hours away from the hospital I'll be at so this is helpful info!

I'm going to add the question, how soon did you have to return to have stitches and staples removed and for check ups?

The largest number seem to stay two nights, but many are just one night. Staying three nights only seems to happen if there were a minor complication. But as you said it varies. Sometimes it comes down to what your insurance will cover.

I agree! You are an inspiration. How long after your release did you have to return to have sutures removed and for your check ups?

Stitches dissolved, so there was no need to remove them. I went back for a two week checkup, which took about two minutes.

My surgery was considered out patient, so they keep people for 23 hours or less. I went in late morning and left the following morning. Make sure you take a pillow with you to hold against your stomach on the drive home. You will also want to stop every hour to get out and walk a little bit, to help prevent blood clots.

You mentioned Blood Clots? This is my biggest scare. Do you know what the sign is to watch for? Also, what is the percentage of people getting the VSG done that had problems with clots.

Thanks,

My center gave me Heprin shots while I was in the hospital and then Lovenox for 30 days after to prevent blood clots. I had no prior issues with blood clots and it seems like a normal precautionary step.

Hi,

I am from New Brunswick Canada.  My surgery was around noon on Monday and the doctor was ready to send me home Wed evening but agreed to let me stay until the next AM.

I stayed 2 full days, left the 3rd day.. I just had gall bladder surgery and I was in there at 8am and left at 7pm that same day.. The Sleeve is a more complexed surgery, they just want to make certain that you are ok :)
