My husband is finally considering WLS. RNY vs. Sleeve (I am RNY) and he is concerned he won't be able to lose weight and maintain his muscle mass/strength.

Were y'all successful with staying strong?

Any tips or words of encouragement / success from a man's perspective would be helpful!

Do you love your sleeve??

Thanks!!

The surgery type doesn't matter. The issue is having a significant calorie deficit that lasts maybe a year or so.

Lifting heavy weights is the only way to maintain muscle while still losing. Heavy weights. If you can do more than 8 or 10 repetitions, the weight is too light. He will still lose some muscle while in a calorie deficit, but he can actually build strength if he works out hard enough. Just remember that strength and muscle mass aren't the same.

He should consider the surgery type based on other considerations. either surgery won't affect strength at all. Calorie deficit is a calorie deficit, RNY, VSG, or no surgery at all.

Yes, he does not believe the surgery matters with regards to the muscle retention. He just has not made up his mind about which surgery in general. I am not even sure he will seriously consider it - new insurance kicks in November 1st and we will have to see if there is coverage. I am looking for positive stories to share!

I have been focusing on cardio and not weights so not much help. But the sleeve was the perfect choice for me as I am more of a volume eater. The sleeve, even 18 months later keeps that in check.

I started working out at 10 weeks post op. I built strength during WL and maintained muscle mass. Once I stopped losing, I actually gained muscle mass as I upped calories and protein.

There is no reason why anyone needs to look gaunt or drawn or sickly because of WLS. If a person is careful with his macro nutrients and vitamins it helps a great deal. Getting adequate protein will go a long way to help maintain muscle.

I chose VSG for several reasons, but one of the best by-products of the VSG is that at almost 4 years post op I can eat like a normal person, when called for (parties, dinners out, that sort of thing). Yes, my portions are very small compared to most men, but I can eat any foods without a problem. It is by far one of the best things I have done for my overall health and well being.

My husband had VSG a year after me so I'll speak for him since he doesn't get on here anymore.

Fact: he's going to lose some muscle mass during this process. It's inevitable but he can minimize the impact by doing resistance work on a regular basis and getting lots of protein in his diet (which he'll need to do anyway).

As for strength, my husband lost over 100 lbs. and didn't see any reduction in his actual strength. And my husband LOVES his sleeve and the fact he's no longer overweight/obese for the first time in his life.

As of today, a year and three weeks out, I have lost 118 since surgery and reached my goal a couple months ago. It is the best think I have done for myself. I have regained my life and ability to participate. Strongly recommend it. My fears of not being able to eat some foods, socialize like I want to, etc have not been realized. Obviously during the heavy loss phase which is typically a year or so, some things are different but not to the point of being unable to manage it. Yes you lose some muscle mass but carrying around 187 vs my high of 336, thats going to happen. I do miss putting my shoulder into something and it not moving :) My whole life I've been "big guy" or some variation. Now that I'm where I am, I'm pretty average. That took a little adjustment but its well worth it. Good luck to him!
