Need some recommendations PRETTY PLEASE!!!

Hi! Its me again.

LOL.

2 weeks post-op (yesterday) and feeling good. Well ... except for the fact that I experienced food getting stuck for the first time today. I'm in week three now, so I get to have crackers with my creamy soups and tuna, and lets just I got a little excited.

Not an experience I plan on repeating. lol.

Anyway ... Now for what I am actually on here for. I need some help, my lovely fellow sleevers. It's about the vitamins. The multivitamin to be more specific. I REALLY hate it. I have the orange flavored chews (Celebrate brand), and my tummy does not appreciate it when I force myself to eat it every morning. This morning my body fought back pretty hard. I almost threw up, and it sucked.

I wanted to ask if anyone else has ever experienced this with the starburst like, soft chew vitamins? And if so, do you have any recommendations of a multivitamin that worked better for your tummy?

I don't think I can keep forcing myself to take the soft chews.

Any good recommendations for alternatives would be greatly, GREATLY appreciated!

First, don't eat crackers.  They're useless calories that will do nothing to help you reach your goal.  I'm not sure why they're on your surgeon's plan at all, but I've seen things like mashed potatoes on people's plans too, so nothing really surprises me.

So, vitamins.  Take them with food.  Mix them in with yogurt.  Ultimately, you don't need to have a chewable, even now.  You just need a vitamin with 200% of most vitamins and minerals.  The only time I've had nausea with vitamins is when I've taken them on an empty stomach.

Yeah, I think I'm letting those go. Thank you for the advice. I'm really struggling with the food part of this so far. Like finding whats best to eat and stuff. Its my main worry, eating foods that keep me from reaching my goal. Mashed potatoes is on my list too. But I'm trying to pick out the good recommendations on my surgeons list, and stay away from bad foods. It's surprising hard though. Just never been that good at making good meal plans. I'm still learning, and researching though. I really want to meet my goals.

Thanks for the great feedback! I'll try eating a little something before I begin taking my vitamins in the morning :).

It's challenging!  Surgeons don't tend to have any background in nutrition and even nutritionists aren't required to have education in nutrition. (Registered Dieticiens are the educated/vetted ones.)  There's a lot of misinformation out there and, sadly, just because we can eat a thing doesn't mean it'll help us achieve our goals of weight loss and sustainability.

Right now, and really forever, you should be focusing on proteins and the carbs you do consume should be as unprocessed and unrefined as possible. I'm 2.8 years post op and I don't think I've eaten more than 10 crackers in that time!  And the ones I did eat were when I was in the hospital with my dad and those were better than no food at all. I do eat the occasional potato, but it's rare and I stick to the ones I cook myself so I can control what goes in/on them. (Potatoes are healthy when fairly unadulterated.)  But yeah, at this point your diet should be very skewed toward protein and not much else.

You can do it :)

Hi ya

I totally had the same experience with the Celebrate orange soft chews. I think it was all the sugar alcohols making it too sickly. I ended up just sticking to their multivitamin protein shakes (not that they taate so great either****il I got confident enough to try a centrum.

I don't know what brands are available in the U.S but there is also Clinicians brand multivitamin powder which can be used by sprinkling in your food (think with cream of wheat or some yoghurt). That was recommended by my surgeon. I'm sure there might be a similar product someone could recommend?

Good luck

I had trouble with chewable vitamins right after surgery.  The sweetness made me nauseated. My Nutritionist suggested crushing the vitamin and mixing it with a little plain greek yogurt.  This solved the problem.  I did this for most of the first year.

Next, I wouldn't eat crackers, even now 3.5 years post op.  Carbohydrates cause food cravings for me.  I love them dearly, but I know they mess up my will power and cause me to overeat.  They are also empty calories and you need to be thinking nutrition with everything you eat.

I am glad you are doing so well.  Congratulations on your new sleeve.  I hope it brings you the best results!

Thank you! Researching good food to eat is definitely my main focus right now. Gotta make that goal!

It could be the sugar alcohols, but it's hard to say. Some things will cause irritation just because they sit in your stomach and are trapped there.

What usually works is taking two regilar adult multis, not chewable. Take them with plenty of water to wash them through your stomach and into your intestine. That way they can't irritate your stomach.

This reminds me of something my anatomy prof said.  She worked as a radiologist and would get x-rays of people with masses in their bowels and their doctors worried about tumors.  99% of the time it was just undigested calcium pills :P
