GERD, PPI, food not digesting

I had a sleeve about 4 years ago and have had GERD pre-post op. I take PPI Rx and have been asked by nursepractioner to get off it because of long term complications. Anemic, low on Vit D. Suggestion was probiotic. Going to work with a pharmacist on digestion enzymes.
Just spent most miserable weekend trying to get off PPI and taking probiotic.
I couldn't handle it.
My food is not digesting correctly.
Anyone having same issues? Where do I start?

I have been on omeprazole since surgery in 2008.  I have always had GERD.  I remember it since my 20's, so approx 20 years.  I am seeing a GI now and after my EGD next week, will be asking her for a new PPI.  I do have a history of active alcoholism, and I have a hiatal hernia.  I suspect the EGD will give us treatment options.  I PRAY that some aleviation of symptoms can be found.  This blows.  I do a probiotic as well, but it doesn't really do anything.

I had been advised to get off of PPI due to long term side effects of them. I have talked to a pharmacist who works with digestive enzymes and going back to nurse practitioner.

GERD is a contraindication for VSG, so I'm surprised your surgeon did that surgery instead of RNY.  I recommend seeing a GI doc and your bariatric doctor.  The only way to fix this might be with revision surgery to RNY.

You know you can't quit the PPIs cold turkey?  You have to wean yourself off.

I would definitely contact the bariatric surgeon ASAP, or a bariatric surgeon.  A probiotic alone cannot replace a PPI because when we have GERD with the sleeve it is mechanical - the structure of the sleeve causes it.  A probiotic won't help with mechanical failure.

In my case, my GERD appears to be caused by gluten, dairy, and carbs.  Having said that, you need to contact a bariatric surgeon familiar with the procedure.  They will be able to determine what is going on more accurately than someone not familiar with our altered anatomy.

I follow a ketogenic diet post-op. I also have a diagnosis of binge eating disorder. Feel free to ask me about either!

The bariatric surgeon is the one who put me on the PPI's to start with. Thanks for your input though.

I have had GERD for many years. Taken various kinds of medications for it. I realized opting for the sleeve was an increased risk, it might get worse. I also have a hiatal hernia. My surgeon could have fixed the hernia at surgery but choose to take the gallbladder out instead as it was acutely problematic. I sleep with the head of my bed elevated and take my medication. It is well controlled at present.

All that to say this.  I personally love seeing a NP, ANP, or PA for general issues. Labs, colds, aches and pains. My son is a PA, but unless they work with or have been trained in gastroenterology I would not use them for my GERD. Most pcps would refer you to a specialist for any long lasting major issues. I also have high regard for pharmacists, we have two in our immediate family. I ask them anything regarding medications and how they might interact and side effects.  I would not choose them to council me on stomach issues. Ask them how or when to take probiotics or  recommend one brand over another, absolutely.

I do use several types of probiotics, kefir, fermented vegetables, and kombucha. I have found them to be helpful in reducing my ppt but have not eliminated it.

I agree with previous posters that advised seeking additional help. It is not only unpleasant but is a considerable health risk to go forward with the GERD unmanaged. Please keep us posted on your progress. I hope you find some relief soon.

I have crohns disease  and on prilosec been thru them all this one seems to be working for me

I am in the process of doing gastric sleeve

Was at my dietitian a couple of weeks ago  she said that some of the patientstaff have gone through all of them and get no relief from them that being said

A as a adn nurse I would not rely on the new for that unless she works in the bariatric doctors office

2 go see  both the bariatric surgeon and a gi doctor

I love probiotics but would not rely on them to calm my Gerd

Wrong info given

Do not stop taking them until late you see the two doctors

There's a lot of research on long term side effects of PPI's. So, I have been trying to change from PPI to something else. But, I have been on them so long my stomach is not very functional.
