BMI Goal Unrealistic? How long will weight loss continue?

Hello!

I am wondering if anyone out there has a BMI goal and if it is realistic to have one?  I had my 9-month follow-up (a little early) yesterday.  My NUT told me that I have already met her goal for me.  It was to have a BMI in the 25-30 range.  My current BMI is 28 which still puts me in the overweight category.  I am hoping to reach the "healthy weight" category which is a 24 BMI and require me to lose another 24 pounds or so.  Is this unrealistic for me?  I haven't reached my 1-year mark yet and my understanding was that I should continue to lose at least until that point with the sleeve.

So I'm over 3 years out and I can lose weight.  I've lost ~13 lbs in the past 2 months.  So the short answer is there is no time limit.  The more complicated answer is that it is different and challenging and wont come off as 'easy' as it did in the first 6 months.  Realistically you should watch what you eat and how much activity you get for the rest of your life.  Finding maintenaince / weight stableness is a challenge.

Oh and on your BMI - short answer - yes you can get to any BMI you want dependign on how much you push.

Realistically what BMI you want to be at is different for everyone.  You could have a BMI of 30 and have 2% bodyfat - so I would take BMI with a grain of salt as there are many other factors in play.

At my lightest I was barely 'normal' bmi (24.4), but I was thin.  I was a college athlete and have wide hips / shoulders so I know my bone structure is larger and I carry a significant amount of muscle.  I personally would rather have more muscle and have a higher BMI for many reasons but a big one is muscle burns carloeis which means I can have more flexibility with my diet -- but even better I'll be less likely to break a hip when I get older and I can lift heavy things, and have more fun in the gym :) and muscles are way more attractive than skinny fat (IMHO).

That makes sense to me.  I work out a lot and am definitely muscular.  Maybe that has something to do with it.  I do have excess skin around my stomach which is heavy so I am assuming has some weight to it.  But I am strong which I way prefer to skinny fat as well!!!

As I neared goal I found having Bodyfat testing done very helpful... much more accurate and realistic picture than BMI. I have a blog post about it if you click on my name...it takes into account your muscle, BMI is just a formula.

Second I hate to tell you skin doesn't weigh much.... You can see from my signature I've had Plastic Surgery... my lower body lift front and back was a total of 4 1/2lbs... total for 3 surgeries 6 1/2lbs. So while great in volume, skin doesn't weigh much.

Weight loss will continue for as long as you work at it.

But, let me tell you, it did a number on my brain when my surgeon told me I'd met his goal.  It was really hard to overcome the feelings of "oh, maybe I don't need to lose any more weight."  So don't let yourself fall into that trap if you can avoid it.

^^^^THIS^^^^

My doctor told me at my last appointment that my goal weight (145) was really pushing it, and that I was doing great and had met his goals for me... I was something like 172 when I was there...

I was really pissed when I left there... what does he mean it'll be hard to get to my goal (which I don't think, at 5'5" tall is all that lofty of a goal, and seriously I am considering lowering it to 135 once I reach it!)?? I can do this! Screw him!

OK, so those were MY thoughts :)

I am 156.0 this morning, and still have a month until I go in for my 9 month check up... I REALLLY want to be in the 140's when I go in there next month...  to my doctor... look what I can do!

That's my attitude.

But I have to tell you, having the support I have here made me know I can get to whatever goal I want, because I have the know-how thanks to the people here!

Hi:

My VSG is on Monday. I'm the same height as you are and my nutritionist put 140 lbs as my goal weight. I, however, am shooting for 135. I've been 135 (pre-kids) and that's where I'm comfortable at. It doesn't matter what you weigh as long as you're comfortable and happy with it.

Don't let anyone tell you what is best for you. You know you better than anyone.

Doctors goals are based on a formula they use.  I think for sleevers it is 60% of excess weight...this is based on average results.  So what they usually do is take starting weight and subtract (at 5'5" it would be 125lbs) and that is what the totally amount of excess weight would be.  Then they multiply that by 60%...there are calculators out there on the internet.

No reason to decide you want to be average though..so you do whatever you want to.  Some people lose less, some lose more. I hope I fall in the latter

I met my 60% excess weight loss goal at 5 months!  I think the fact that I exercise has been extremely helpful!
