Would like to connect with my fellow surgery date friends. We should track our progress together!

Great idea to track our progress together  I had my VSG on 16 Feb 17 in BC Canada.  Things are going great.  Pain at the main incision is a lot better today but it has been pretty bad post-op.  I can get out of bed now without wincing too much.  Water and protein are going down fine.  My endocrinologist said I could go off my diabetic meds except metformin.  Blood sugar is almost normal now  - awesome.  Not feeling too hungry.  Off to see my family doctor tomorrow for a check-up.

I had surgery on the 20th, so you're a little further along than me.

I had my surgery 2-15-17.  Just went back to work yesterday, struggling trying to get all my protein in throughout the day. Getting this liquid diet down feels like a full time job in and of itself right now.

That will get better, I promise. Just about 6 weeks post op here and I remember feeling so hopeless sometimes at first because I thought I would never be able to think about anything but my next food (in dread!). That really does pass fast!

Erin, can you tell what life with sleeve at 6 weeks.post op is like.  What can you eat at this point.  How long after surgery were you on liquids, soft? TYIA

Well for starters, I have no pain now. My incisions are healed and I physically feel better than I did pre-op. I'm walking 3 miles per day 4-5x per week.

As far as food goes, I was on clear liquids for 2 days post op and then on full liquids for 2 weeks. Next was the puree phase which was 2-4 weeks post op. My surgeon really combined puree/soft though. I was able to eat canned chicken and fish, soft scrambled eggs, etc. Just had to make sure they were moist. I started adding in crock pot cooked meats around the 4 1/2 week mark and now at almost 6 weeks I've had fish (salmon and various white fish), shrimp, beef (lean steak, not ground), pork, chicken and turkey.

My current diet consists pretty much only of protein (as it should), except items to flavor with. A quick list of items I'm eating regularly:

  • Ricotta Cheese/cottage cheese
  • Hummus
  • Eggs (made into egg salad with relish or scrambled for breakfast)
  • Deli Meat
  • Canned fish/chicken (mixed with mayo or plain greek yogurt)
  • Yogurt
  • Babybel Cheese/String Cheese/shredded cheese
  • Crockpot/Instant Pot cooked chicken thighs
  • Ground turkey
  • Crockpot/Instant Pot cooked pork roast
  • Pan cooked beef (new addition)
  • Canadian Bacon
  • Tomato sauce
  • Salsa
  • Premier Protein shakes (1 per day)
  • Torani Sugar Free syrups (to flavor my shakes and drizzle over Ricotta, this was a game changer for me)

Currently, I am introducing one new protein at dinner, the days when my kids don't have activities that take me out of the house. This gives me time to try them and see how I react without worry of being sick out of the house (nothing has made me sick or in pain). I can eat about 1.5-2oz of dense solid protein, but quite a bit more of "soft" foods (I can eat a 5.3oz yogurt and a babybel cheese for breakfast, for instance). I love eggs and they go down well, but they fill me up super fast so I can only get in one (6g of protein).

Wow! Thanks for all this info Erin.. very helpful. I asked because if they can't do the sleeve when they remove my band, I would be looking at June for the sleeve. I already have a trip booked in July for my daughter's 16th birthday (at an all-inclusive resort). I Think that's cutting it too close and may opt to wait until after the trip.

I will say that at 6 weeks I'm just now getting to the point where I would consider it being "easier" at a restaurant. I've eaten out twice so far. The first time was a business dinner at an Italian place and I got the Caprese salad and just ate the cheese (I was 1 month post op) and the 2nd time was right after that and I got egg salad at a diner.

Right now I mostly feel like it's just a terrible waste of money because I can eat so little. We have a family vacation to NC in May and I plan to eat some good seafood then!

I think I've waited this long, I should probably wait till after the trip to do second surgery (sleeve). Unless, of course, by some miracle I come out sleeved on the 16th.  Then by July I should be able to eat small.meals..  my other fear is that they remove the band and I can't control my weight without the tool...my nerves are taking its toll today..ughhh

I'm afraid of the reflux. Has this been an issue for you?
