Lets try this again
Jan 11, 2012
It has been 422 days since my original post. Approximately a year and two months ago my primary care physician (we have military health care) refused to give me a referral to a bariatric surgeon. She was a skinny little thing that looked at me like I was pathetic and told me I could lose the weight if I really tried. She sent me to a nutritionist instead. I lost about 8 pounds before I ended up with a knee injury (which I am positive is a direct result of my weight) which limited my mobility and kept me from being able to exercise regularly for several months. Needless to say I lost my momentum and gained back those 8 pounds, plus an additional 5. The thing that kept ringing in my head this whole time was the person who commented on my original post telling me to get a 2nd opinion. Afer all, it's my life and why I am letting this one doctor, whom I dont' even care for, control my future? So today I went back the see the doctor and specifically asked NOT to see my primary care physician. While I was there I again asked for a referral and was given one with no hesitation, I can't believe I waited ths long! I have to wait 2 more days before I can make my appointment for the consultation. I'm excited about the prospect but don't want to get my hopes up yet in case the surgeon decides for some reason that I am not a good candidate. Either way, I feel like I have tackled a huge hurdle just by getting the referral.
What I have learned from this experience so far is to take control and don't let others decide your future!
