Day one of Full Liquids and a recipe...

Jul 27, 2010

At 8:45 a.m. this morning I weigh 267.4. I am starting my Full Liquids diet today. I'm one week Pre-Op for the lap band. 9:00 a.m. and I have Cream of Wheat for breakfast (for the first time in my life). It's not too bad, similar to grits, but creamier I guess.

So, my sister drops her two daughters off for me to watch while she takes one of her sons to the eye doctor. I take my nieces with me to drop my daughter off at work, then we proceed to the grocery store to pick up a few items. Here it is, only 9:40 a.m., and I'm eating a sample of the sliced turkey from the deli... OOPS! I forgot about liquids only. Okay, not so bad, only had a bite of turkey, I shared the rest of the slice with my nieces. Done at the grocery store, headed home....

They help me make vanilla pudding, cherry Jello, and corn and potato chowder (all regular sugar/calories, NOT diet, intentionally). While we're making the soup, (around 10:45 a.m.) which I plan to puree, I'm tasting it as I usually do... not until I get out my submersion blender do I realize, SHOOT I was eating bites of potatoes and corn; they are not liquids! UGH! (mental head slap)

Fine. Soup is made, I add a can of white kidney beans for protein, I puree the heck out of it. Voile! Cream soup (which is on my Full Liquid diet). And boy does it taste GREAT, even pureed. Here’s the recipe as I always made it in the past:

Sassy Potato Corn Chowder

SERVES: 6

4 slices bacon, chopped                                              3 C. potatoes, peeled & cubed ( 1 ¼ lb.)

1 (13.5 oz.) can chicken broth                                1 (10 oz.) pkg. frozen corn, thawed, drained

½ C. onion, chopped                                              2 T. flour

½ C. Miracle Whip salad dressing                                    2 C. 2% milk

- Cook bacon in large saucepan until crisp; drain. Return to pan.

- Stir in potatoes, broth, corn and onion. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low, simmer 15 minutes.

- Mix flour and Miracle Whip, stir in milk. Add to potato mixture; continue cooking 3-5 minutes or until thoroughly heated.

- Sprinkle with additional bacon.

Today I changed it in this way:

1% milk (instead of 2%)

added a whole can of white kidney beans

then, PUREED, and added more chicken broth to dilute and smooth it out.

I’m not sure this is a recipe anyone else would try, because I don’t use diet, lite, sugar-free, or artificial sugar products.

Anyway, it’s now 1:55 p.m. and I’m not hungry. YES! I’ve made it about half-way through my first liquid day!

I spoke to my doctor's office today and was able to confirm that I will be in the hospital overnight for at least one night, if not more than one night. (The reason for my possible extended stay is that I have a hyper-coagulation disorder. We need to be EXTRA careful both before AND after surgery to ensure I don't get or have any clots.)

More to follow…
