10th Anniversary
Jun 11, 2013
I first joined this site in early 2003 as I was searching for bariatric surgery information. I had my surgery 10 years ago this week!
I really can't figure out how to use this new profile format, but I wanted to post an update.
I have remained relatively stable at around 185 pounds. Still considered obese (BMI is a little over 30) but in much better shape than I was pre-op (as high as 265 pounds)!
For many years, I was able to control my diabetes with diet but, last year my blood sugars started creeping back up and I am back on meds (including insulin). However, I don't see this as a defeat because I know that I have a history of diabetes in my family, I am still technically overweight (with way too much belly fat) and I'd rather be able to control my condition (with or without meds) than for it to be uncontrollable. I had nine good years of being a meds-free diabetic. I am grateful for the little things ...
I never embraced exercise the way I should have and know that if I had done so, I'd probably weigh less and be in better health. I'm not perfect. Sue me! I've had some dental issues (could be a combo of the diabetes + nutritional deficiencies) as well as some digestive/bowel issues, but nothing serious. There are some things I have difficulty eating or digesting (raw greens, some dairy, beef), but that's really okay.
I am proud of myself for keeping most of the weight off. I'm sad to say that almost everyone I know who had weight loss surgery has gained all of their weight back ... plus some. I feel like I'm in a select, blessed group of post-ops. I wouldn't trade nothing for the journey ...
