Holly I had a lap band in 1983. I lost about 100 lbs and the surgery was very easy on me. I was back to work in 3 weeks. In the early 1990's I began running a low grade fever and felt tired most of the time. I also had started gaining my weight back. I saw my family doctor about the fever and he ran some lab and diagnosed me with chronic fatigue. To make a long story short over the next 10 years my symptoms worsened and I was getting chills, achy joints, and fever at least weekly and sometimes daily. I really thought I had some immune disease. I saw a disease specialist and he told me that some people with the banding surgery developed an infection in the stomach and put me on antibiotics for a month. This helped not at all. I developed diabetes. My weight climbed to an all time high and I started looking into a gastric bypass. Prior to surgery I had a Upper GI because of the previous banding. It seemed everything would be ok. I had surgery this summer 6/9. When my surgeon took the band off my stomach was in such bad shape he thought the stitches would not even hold. I was put in ICU with a stomach full of tubes. Thanks to a lot of prayers and a really good surgeon I did fine. Now to the good part. Since I got that band off all my symptoms have not returned. I do not get the chills and fever. The tiredness and achy joints are gone. There were some other strange problems like chronically having blood in my urine that also has disappeared. I wonder if I had not decided to have this bypass what my stomach would have done in the future. Would it have killed me or would I have just spent the rest of my life in misery not knowing why? I have been a nurse for many years. I have not seen alot of information on this happening but am interested if there are others who have had these symptoms or some similar to chronic fatiigue or fibromyalgia post banding after 10 or more years. Hope this kinda answers your questions. Oh one more thing...YES even with all the danger I was in post op I would have the gastric bypass again but would not have the banding if that were my only option to lose weight.

Holli, I just read your message on the board. I know not many Bandsters post here, and wanted to direct you to a couple other boards where you may be able to get a ton of great advice from fellow bandsters... The first place would be: http://www.spotlighthealth.com/common/SG/topics.asp?m=1&sb=25 and the second: LapBandTalk.com There are also several Yahoo groups for bandsters that you may wish to subscribe to. I wish you the best of luck!

I SAID A PRAYER FOR YOU TODAY~*~ I said a prayer for you today And know God must have heard- I felt the answer in my heart Although He spoke no word I didn't ask for wealth or fame, I knew you wouldn't mind, I asked Him to send treasures Of a far more lasting kind, I asked that He'd be near you At the start of each new day, To grant you health and blessings And friends to share your way. I asked for happiness for you In all things great and small, But it was for His loving care I prayed the most of all.
