Question:
I need some options for my liquid diet!

I am on a liquid diet for the week before my surgery, 01-02-02, and have just been having sugar-free jello and broth! Could somebody give me some other options that I haven't thought of! I am trying to stay away from juices because they contain too much sugar! Thanks for any help I can get!    — Lori D. (posted on December 29, 2001)

You didn't say if it had to be Clear or Full liquid. Drink juice too! Just make sure it's 100% juice like Juicy Juice or Tropicana Pure Premium or Dole Pineapple. If you can have full liquids...like milk...make a Mock Pina Colada w/ pineapple juice, skim milk and a tiny bit of coconut extract. Make a creamsicle w/ OJ and milk blended with a little ice. I like Welch's 100% Grape juice blended with Ice to make a slushy too! I can't stomach the taste of artificial sweeteners besides Splenda...but not many companies are using it in their products, so I rely fully on the 100% juice for my sweetener. Tip: Post-Op when you are ready for solids...use 100% apple juice concentrate in you recipes instead of sugar and use unsweetened apples sauce or pureed prunes (that's right) instead of OIL in you baked goods. The pureed prunes work best in chocolate recipes and you can't taste the prunes...just give the cookie, cake, etc a moist texture.

I liked the Knox Nutra Joint drink mix. You mix it with either 4-8 oz of water and it has a fruity flavor. I believe it has 8 gm of protein in one serving with no sugar.

Chinese Egg Drop Soup and Chinese Hot/Sour soup. Dilute the juices and add plenty of ice.

You are wise to avoid the real juices. Apparently you have already started reading sugar g on the labels, so I commend you. There's sugar free popsicles, boullion, you can add a few spices to the hot things, herbal teas, and oddly, V8 cocktail juice is often considered a clear liquid. You can add bouillion to that or heat it as is. Clear is kind of a boring stage, truly, so you're not nuts!
