Question:
HOW COME I CAN EAT SO MUCH POPCORN POST-OP

I had open RNY on April 5th and have lost 68 lbs so far. I eat very small amounts of food and it fills me up like it should. However, popcorn is the ONLY thing that I can eat lots of without feeling full. Everything else fills me up quickly (like it should) but with popcorn, I can eat almost an entire bag of microwave popcorn without feeling full. I can't figure out why? Anyone have any idea's or guesses as to why?    — Peggy D. (posted on July 30, 2002)

WELL I CANT SAY WHY YOU CAN EAT SO MUCH OF IT, WISH I KNEW MYSELF...CAN ONLY EAT 2 TO 3 OUNCES OF NORMAL FOOD, BUT LIKE YOU CAN EAT ALMOST WHOLE BAG OF POPCORN....I LOOK AT IT THIS WAY....IT IS GOOD FOR FIBER AND I BUY THE LOWFAT..OH BY THE WAY...HAVE YOU TRIED TO DRINK IN THE MIDDLE OF EATING THAT POPCORN....BLOWS ME UP.....

Popcorn, potato chips and some others grind into dust when eaten. But popcorn is tasty and reasonably low calorie. I have it sometimnes.

Hi there. I am 6 months post op and have lost 75 pounds. I too can eat a ton of pop corn. I think its because it shrinks down as soon as it hit your mouth. I still try to avoid it because I like mine with extra butter and Im sure its not the best thing for me to eat.

I am over 2 yrs post op. And yes I can eat a lot of popcorn. It is like Bob said grinds to nothing so it takes a lot to fill us up. Eat it slowley. I eat popcorn almost every day. Now I do put butter on it , but I am keeping my weight up (135). I used to eat the low fat butter flavor kind and put butter spray on it , it is a great snack. But for the sake of preserving your pouch DON'T drink liquids with it. Enjoy!!

Here's an experiment I learned from the "Little House on the Prairie" books: Take two identical glasses and fill one up with milk and the other up with popcorn. One by one, drop the popcorn in the milk. When you are done, you will have one glass filled with popcorn and milk that did not overflow and one glass that is empty. Popcorn's the only thing that can take up the space of something else (liquid) without adding volume (in a small-eating scale--I'm sure if you did a ton of milk and a ton of popcorn you might end up with a little more liquid volume).
