Question:
How much protein can be absorbed at one time?

I checked the library and the answers vary from 30g/hour to 30g/3 hours. Which is it?    — Amy A. (posted on August 15, 2003)

general consensus is 30 grams per 2 hours for normal people. Nobody <i>really</i> knows exactly with bypassed patients, but was told that 30 per 2 is a good rule of thumb to live by.

It may be the "general consensus", but that doesn't have anything to do with fact. I've seen this question asked many times, but I've not yet seen anyone provide any scientific information that verify the 30g "rule". Is there anyone out there that can provide such info? Rob

YOU GO ROB!!!! Why don't we ever hear from the REAL experts????? There are so many differing opinions on here and that is concerning. You take one so called 'expert's' advice and you could mess things up. Best to stick close to your surgeon and do what your surgeon recommends. People's opinions on here are just that...OPINIONS! I welcome opinions, but I do what my surgeon suggests and it is working! This is really all so new. Virgin territory. I hope they (the 'real' experts) are compiling data from us. I know I've never been contacted for any input as to my WLS experiences.

for the "professional opinion", join the surgeon/professional CHATS, though I will gaurentee you that each will give you a DIFFERENT answer- EVERYTHING on this board is opinion- even from a professional- Do you consider the bodybuilder running a Nutri Sport store to be able to provide a PROFESSIONAL opinion? I dont think anyone knows for sure how much protein a body can absorb- for I believe each persons body would be different and any answer would be just an opinion. ROB- dont you think when people post theSe types of questions they are asking for OPINIONS?

Sigh. I also sure wish there *was* a good answer. Variable number one is ... what *kind* of protein? A whey protein shake is different from a piece of chicken (I think we, as lay people, can see the truth in *that*). Variable number two is ... what kind of surgery did you have (proximal? distal? RNY? D/S?). I dunno how many variables there are, but one other biggie is *you*. I'm convinced that different people absorb things differently; there may be enough variance even among general rules for this to be a problem.<P>Having said that, I believe the "30 gram" rule pertains to protein shakes, and emanates from the manufacturers who, *if asked*, may tell you anything over 30 grams per serving (of a protein shake) isn't absorbed by "normies." This doesn't explain why some will sell shakes that have an even higher protein gram count per serving (well...except to make more money, of course).<P>As far as listening to doctors go -- this is the kind of info they get from the manufacturer and drug company reps themselves, soooo ... I am not a fan of settling the question based on what your doctor thinks. I get my protein from food *and* from shakes (in roughly equal measure, as it turns out), and my labs show my protein levels to be in the low normal range -- which, interestingly, is where they were for me as a post-op. Maybe my system just isn't gonna soak up more protein no matter *what* I do, but at least I know what it IS soaking up (if you can believe in the accuracy of lab results ... a whole 'nother story there).

D'oh ... I meant to say, my protein labs are the same as they were in my pre-op days, using protein food *and* shakes since my RNY.

The reason we don't hear from, as you put it, real experts, is that the majority of them consider their time to answer questions worth money. My own nutritionist charges 70 bucks an hour and I guarantee he isn't on here answering our questions for free. Want an expert opinion (for what it's worth as Stacie and Suzy pointed out so aptly), then you'd have to <b>pay for it</b> or do some major research on your own.
