Question:
Slim Fast and Dr. Phil drink

I was browsing through some of the weight loss substitute drinks that are left over in my refrigerator from back when I started a diet. I found that the Slim Fast Low Carb drink has 21gm of protein and the Dr.Phil drink has 26gm of protein. Would these drinks be ok to up my proteins. I'm just trying to find some source of protein drink that I might be able to tolerate. I'm thinking my surgery will be the first of September and just doing research ahead of time. Thanks for any answers. Jen    — imgabbie (posted on August 9, 2004)

How much sugar do they have? A WHEY protein drink is easiest to absorb.

Jen, based on experience, what you can tolerate now may be entirely different after surgery, especially if you're having the RNY. I'd look at the sugar content and if it has sugar alcohol, it may give you MAJOR diarrhea, bloating, etc. You'll probably just have to try them, provided the sugar content isn't too high, and see how you do with them. Best of luck to you on your surgery.

Jen, I started drinking the SlimFast low carb drinks for breakfast a few weeks ago. I think they taste better than Adkins or any other protein drink. They do not make me dump so there couldn't be much sugar if any. I cannot handle any sugar at all on an empty stomach. These drinks work just fine on an empty pouch.

You may want to try GNC No Carb Isopure. Two scoops have 50 grams of protein. Mix it with skim milk and peanut butter and you have about 60 or more grams of protein. Check out your nearest health food store and see if you can buy individual packages so you can try them out before you buy a big container. JAY ROBB is a great protein power.

In regards to any protein I have been told by my PA/Nutritionist that your body cannot absorb more than 30g of protein at a time. I use Isopure but only one scoop.

I use Isopure Vanilla Cream Powder and add my own fresh fruits to it - this way I'm not stuck with one flavor. I do like Atkins, and Slim Fast, but seem to eventually hate the after-taste I get. You can also stop by your local gym and try different protein shakes and flavors.

Jen...I haven't tried either of these drinks, but have found the only type of protein drink I can stomach are from Advantage, which I think is the Atkins drink. I have tried creamy vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry. I did not try cafe au lait because I don't like coffee. These are great drinks, they taste very good and don't leave any aftertaste for me, and they have 20 g of protein, 170 calories, 9 g of fat, less than 4 g of sugar and total carbs. My surgeon told me I needed to check any protein drink for the amount of sugar because some of them have too much sugar and could cause dumping. I have had some dumping on rare occasions after drinking these, but I believe it is coming from the milk portion of the drink. The can says very plainly to serve VERY COLD or over ice. I empty my carton and place the cans in my fridge and they get very cold and are quite tasty. I also have been eating protein bars by Advant Edge (I don't know if these are Atkins approved or not...the spelling is different). These have about an average of 210 calories, 9 g of fat and 25-26 g of protein. They are excellent too. My favorites are peanut butter crunch (I don't like the peanut butter with chocolate only...these cripie ones look like they have rice crispies on top with chocolate drizzled over it and solid chocolate on the bottoms), the double chocolate chip brownie (also with rice crispie type stuff on top), cookies and cream (kind of like a lunch cake type thing). These are my favorites. The sugars are less than 5 g and total carbs are a little higher. I find mine at Walmart. Single servings are $1.67 each for the bars (I buy them by the box which has 12 bars and is around $18). The drinks come in a carton with 4-11oz cans. They usually cost about $7.36 but I just found them on sale for $5.20 so I bought 8 cartons because I saved $2.16 per carton and knowing I'd drink them all made it entirely worth it. I hadn't seen them on sale before that time. I'm 7 months post op and have lost 99 pounds. Hope this helps some...good luck and God bless...Kathy
