Question:
Has anyone discovered a sugar-free ice cream?

I've seen lots of "no sugar added" type ice creams, but I'm worried that it might cause dumping for me. I'm trying to find an alternative to protein shakes and milk. Any tips? I've seen make your own ice cream -- sugar free versions, but I'm just not that into making ice cream :) If you've found a good sugar-free ice cream brand, please let me know. I don't know where you live, but in Wisconsin we have a product called Blue Bunny Ice Cream and they make pints of sugar free/fat free ice cream that is very good. The three flavors I have seen are vanilla, chocolate and burgandy cherry.

Freeze sugar free pudding. Also check this site out http://soar.berkeley.edu/recipes/diabetic/ I have been using this site for years. And have learned to modify the recipes and make them taste fantastic!!!! I have been thinking about putting up a website on receipes that I have collected and some of the tricks that have worked for me. Take Care! Margaret

Eadie's ice cream has sugar free vanilla and some other flavors, and it's real good. I buy it in Connecticut at Big Y or A&P

There is no such thing as actual sugar-free ice cream. Ice cream has milk in it, which automatically adds lactose (milk sugar). Lactose probably won't cause dumping, but many post-ops are lactose intolerant and get sick from lactose. Also, the lactose has just as many calories as any other sugar. You can look at the label and see how many sugar grams are in the icecream. If it says "no sugar added" then the sugar grams on the label are probably all lactose.

Two ideas. At Old Country Buffet they make a fat free no sugar added yogurt that I had success with. I onlky eat a small amount but I think Baskin Robbins or Breslers make sugar free ice creams . Trauth dairy here in southwestern Ohio makes a sugar free fat free ice cream in various flavors

Try Breyers Fat-Free Sugar Free Ice Cream. I usually find it at Wal-Mart Supercenter. They also carry Blue Bunny Sugar-Free Low-Fat Ice Cream Sandwiches. Watch out, those ice cream sandwiches can be addictive.

One thing that you can do is to get a good hand blender. Place some skim milk in the freezer untill it is almost ready to freeze. Then, in a LARGE glass, add the milk, some flavoring (such as vanilla), some sweetener, and use the hand blender. When the milk is whipped into a thick consistancy, similar to whipped cream, place into a container, return to the freezer, and freeze. Enjoy!!!!
