Question:
Has anyone drank with meals post-op RNY and still had successful weight loss?

For the life of me, I cannot finish a meal without drinking. I try not to drink very much. But dry mouth related is a symptom of an illness that I have, and I would choke to death if I couldn't drink. Is this gonna keep me from being successful?    — PaulaJ (posted on June 24, 2009)

I have always taken little sips with my meals and it didn't hinder my weight loss. The idea is to keep you from being hungry. But at a year and a half out I still do not experience hunger. In fact I don't like the way food feels in my pouch, so I kind of want to get it out. But thats me. Good luck. Just don't guzzle.

I have the same issue. I was told I could sip a little water. Be careful, It will push the food through faster and could cause you to dump. I use applesause if I'm eating something dry. Especially with meat.

I have always taken sips of water with my meals. If I forget and drink more that a sip, it is VERY uncomfortable. I have found that if I eat iceberg lettuce salad with my meal (especially meat) the water in the lettuce helps both the dry mouth and the premature fullness that dense protein gives me. By "premature" fullness, I mean an uncomfortable fullness after only one bite. I feel I have been successful - losing 130 pounds and maintaining that loss. I am 18 months post RNY.

The applesauce trick is the best idea I have heard. Drinking not only empties the pouch, but moving it too quickly thru the system doesn't allow your body to absorb the nutrients in it, and that will lead to whole lot of ugly problems later. dumping and being hungry, tho not pretty, don't compare to the health issues that come from malnutrition. maybe you can add a few drops of broth or something to you meats before eating them. Best of luck to you and God Bless. hugs, kim

I have been very faithful about not drinking until an hour after a meal because I have a friend who guzzled Diet Cokes during all of her meals and she gained all of her weight back plus some. I don't think that was due to drinking during a meal only but I think it contributed. The apple sauce is a good idea. I eat a few grapes during each meal to quench my mouth.

Idrink with meals, but use milk as my drink since it adds protein to the meals.

I too, eat and drink small amounts of water with food and if i drink too much I have to " give it back" if you know what I mean?? But as with all the other comments you have gotten as long as you dont gulp the liquids you should be ok. I have had the RNY with a scalastic band and my surgery was 10/17/08 and I have lost 199 pds. Best of luck to you. Tracy
