Question:
Is watermelon o.k. at 7 weeks out? It looks so refreshing, i was wondering
if anyone ever dumped on watermelon. Thank you — angel4 (posted on May 27, 2007)

I dumped on it for the longest time. Hurts to dump, not worth the effort of
trying to get a nice piece down. You could have different results than I
did. But it is loaded with sugar. Best of luck, Mickey

Hi Mickey,
I eat watermelon and other fruits and have had no problems. Well,
sometimes a little gassy. LOL.. I think if you just have a little that you
will be fine. Watermelon is good for you, high in licopene (antioxident),
great water content. So enjoy for your holiday weekend. Hope it will be
alrgith for you. Some says that they do have trouble with some fruits. I am
3 months plus post op. Sincerely, Judy R

Defining dumping as heart palpitations, sweats, confusion, nausea, but NOT
vomiting or diarrhea. Yes. And diarrhea. Only later did I find that 2
cups of water melon is 25g sugar (or, A snickers bar!)
If you were to have some melon, you might issue yourself only 2 cubes of
it, and eat some protein, too. But I wouldn't do protein JUST to get in
more watermelon, since the sugars are SO high. It can mess with your wt
loss. Not immediately, but much later.

I am lucky enough to be able to eat watermelon. So far I haven't had any
dumping on the fruit I eat as long as I don't drink anything while eating
it and wait 30 minutes or longer to drink water. I didn't know if could
play on your weight loss though and this concerns me. How bad can it mess
up your weight loss? Since I can't eat anything for desert that is real
sweet (like chocolate or pie) and I can eat fruit I happy with that. Treva

I ate watermelon when I was about 3 months out and I dumped on it for hours
it seemed. The sugar content was too high. I read somewhere that watermelon
is 10% meat and 90% water. I am 3 yrs and 3 mo post-op and ate some a week
ago. Did not dump at all, but I do not swallow the meat of it just the
juice. I had had problems eating and swallowing what I was eating for a few
days and the juice from the watermelon helped me a lot to keep hydrated. As
far as it causing weight gain I do not know. But it is good thing for me
and I like it better and can tolerate it better than most fruits.
Canteloupe is another thing that I like and can eat without dumping. I do
eat the meat of it though and it fills you up quick though. Check with your
surgeon or nutritionist and see what they say about watermelon.

It was the first fruit I ate - around 3 weeks. I love fruits - I tolerate
them well. Up to you and your sugeron/nut. I introduce things as I think I
can eat em.

To answser Treva's question, it is sugar. Fats won't make us fat again,
but sugar will for sure. I gained at 8 yrs out with fruit. And I'm a
distal, distal! I was sticking with slightly safer fruits, but STILL, 8
pounds. And 8 yrs of supposed smarts under my belt!
They came off when fruit season ended, but it also left me serous carb
cravings for awhile. It isn't that we can have NO sugar, but just treat it
as candy. I know some will say that it's a natural sugar, and so it is.
Recently read a study that said fructose is MORE easily absorbed then table
sugar! Why is "high fructose corn syrup" all in the news, right?
So, I do taste watermelon, but only THERE. Bringing one home here and
having it available is a very bad idea for me! LOL

The leader at our suport group said she found out through our
dietecian(spelling?) that watermelon was one of the most high sugar fruits.
I know, you wouldn't think that was true huh? Cantaloupe and Honey dew
melon are among the lowest.

Ask your nutritionist before. If you just cannot handle it, try a very
small piece maybe. But only if you can stop. It has been in my fridge
calling me but I havn't answered out of fear! I had cantalope, and I eat it
after my protein b/c it's juicy. No dumping problems yet...knock on wood!

Just 7 weeks out? Well, try a little of it, but NO SEEDS! Everyone is
different so you may tolerate watermelon perfectly well -- or maybe not. If
it stays down and you really like it, be careful to not overdo it
(quantity) the next time. Measure out (say the size of your fist if you've
had nothing else to eat recently) what you want up front and don't go back
for more. The good stuff like this can be a great temptation go get back on
the slippery slope to regaining lost weight.
