Hi Eliana, I don't know which surgery you had or how far out into your post op period you are so you might want to check with the surgeon to see if he will allow you to have the bars. Not all surgeons allow the bars right away. If you're being allowed any type of regular food you like then you can certainly use the bars instead of shakes if that's what you prefer but be careful because just like anything else, some can be very high in calories. My husband eats one brand that has something like 35 grams of protein per bar but also has over 350 calories..Way too many for me but he can afford it since he weighs much more than me and lifts weights. Good luck! Valerie

Found them at wal mart and reg grocery store was 1.99 at safe way on sale for .99 cents, variety of flavers, good taste for protein. I also try to find it other ways wasa peas, jerky u need to look at suger etc on back found one with 28 grm, 3 g sugar 1 whole package is a portion. could eat it just fine one week then not the next? Keep trying different things, beef sticks not pepporni, chz moz sticks, keep up the good work Tammi always ask your doc.

I would have to know more information about which type of surgery and how far post op you are. A lot of surgeons don't like the protein bars per se'- mine calls them "candy bars". I must admit, the ones I have tried were very good and I had to get them out of the house. As far as the protein shakes go, I have just found one I really like that I got from BariatricEating.com called OhYeah! Chocolate milkshake- 14 oz. with 32 gms protein, 7 carbs, 3 gms sugar. It is a meal replacement shake. Lactose free, tastes like chocolate milk. Best of luck, always best to check with your surgeon/nutritionist as each has a different opinion. Dawn V.

Protein bars have alot extra things that do not help wt loss even though they are a protein source. My dietician instructed me to have one protien shake a day for a meal. I buy GNC brand of 100%Whey Protein powder which I mix with skim or 1% milk in the blender then add frozen fruit until it becomes a thick shake like mixture. It is almost a treat for me and the taste is improved 100%. If you are not restricted to liquids, there are alot of other sources of protien that are better for you than the bars, esp due to the sugar content.

I think they are ok. I am assuming that you are post-RNY? I too got burnt out on the drinks. There is one thing to watch though with the bars; CARBOHYDRATES !! Sometimes the bars look promising, but have pretty highs carbs. Plus, if they are sweetened with sugar, corn syrup, or cane sugar, they can make you dump, or give you carb cravings. Costco has some bars, and now chocolate drinks, by a company called Premier Nutrition, that is very high (30gr) of protein per bar or drink. They are not bad, but they only have between 5-8 grams of carbs per bar/drink. This is good because many high protein foods have a minimum of 24gr per serving. Check it out, seriously. Just remember that if you put too many carbs in your body, it makes your body burn the carbs and not your fat. And, if you don't burn those carbs, they get stored as fat...........Hope this helps!! -Darlene

Answer one: depending upon what surgery you had and how far along you are have a lot to do with how to answer this question. Answer two: as my NUT would say - the best protein (bar, shake, powder, supplement) is the one you will eat. There is no point in recommending something that you do not like and won't eat/consume, etc. Good luck. BTW - I eat protein bars (power crunch is my fav).

My WLS (rny) was 7-22-08 and I've been eating protein bars (K2O) for at least 4-5 weeks. I love them and they give me what I need as far a protein goes. Most of the time I'll split them in half and use them for my in-between meals snack. It is really hard for me to eat 6 times a dayand these bars help me to those "extra meals" in.

If you can eat...eat real protein (as in a real meal)...seriously! Protein bars are in my opinion, are WLS candy that are terrible choice for actual weight loss....because most are so loaded with fat, carbs, sugar, sugar alcohols (which personally hurt me more than regular sugar...OUCH!) They are not meant to be a weight loss aid... Despite popular belief that vitamin supps are better aborbed than anything else...Vits from REAL foods are far easily absorbed and better for us than foods fortified with vits. Only "we" cannot eat enough to get what we need from food! (And many of us are picky eaters and do not eat a variety of foods that have a variety of vits) So we need supps ("we" that have altered stomach and intestines and malabsorption) So be careful choosing a protein bar...Look at all the ingredients carefully...I stand there at the protein bar section and get so disgusted with them all. The best ones are found in the vitamin stores and not in dept or the grocery stores. While I might choose a protein bar over a fast food burger and fries...I wouldn't do it daily as a supplement but as a meal replacement once in a while! I'd rather go grab a piece of baked or grilled chicken than eat a protein bar...I like to take a protein bar when I fast for labs and then I can eat something without having to wait or search for healthy food while I am out at my docs office (A 45 min drive from my house). I take one when I am out and about on errands...but only a few months ago I got addicted to them! And it scared the heck outta me because when i couldn't find a decent protein bar I was looking for peanut and chocolate flavor and looking to eat Reeces Cups and Peanut M&M's for that flavor and easy availability! So careful there! For some of us, that chocolate is nothing more than a trigger for old habits! Choose your protein bar wisely! If you really have to try a protein bar...Try "Oh Yeah Wafers" ( I love love love the vanilla creme ones in the yellow package! They are peanutbuttery too)...Low fat, low carbs, low sugar, low calories...tastes YUMMY and light! They melt in the heat JUST LIKE A CANDY BAR....so don't leave in the car...LOL

I eat protein bars every once in a while. Like others have said, they have a lot of other stuff in them that makes them like candy. I use the Atkins Advantage Shakes from Walmart and they taste great. My surgeon suggested them because I couldn't get the powders pass my nose and so I tried them and they have lots of flavors. I had lap band 4-16-08 and I am down 60 pounds and lots of inches. Good Luck! Diane

Protein shakes are used because they are liquid... if you are going to consume protein in a non-liquid form, you're better off eating "real" food. I would also suggest bringing this up with your doctor or nutritionist. Good luck.

Just a hint from someone 5 years out (today 11/12/203), I make popsickles out of my protein drink. It is really nice in summer, or just as a snack. It gets the nutrition down, but feels like a snack treat, instead of just the same old.....
