Hey Elizabeth, I'm hoping your gas pains go away quickly! I'm getting banded on the 18th, and have heard about the gas pains, but didn't know they lasted for so long for some people. A while ago, someone posted that they used Gas X and it helped. And I'm thinking the more you can be upright the better - gas goes up and if you're lying down there's no where for it to escape. Maybe it's worth trying. Please keep me posted on your success (and how long it takes before the pains disappear). And cross your fingers and other parts for me on the 18th! Richelle

I am also 5 days post op and I still have the gas build up, I find that walking works wonders. I live in AZ so it is too hot to walk outside during the day so I do laps in the house. It seems to get the gas moving. Good Luck. Cathy M.

It seems that Cathy is the one who found the right way out of the gas issue....WALKING! It really does work....farting whilst walking is a double dose of a good thing too! hahahaha seriously might sound like a little engine pushing you along but everything will help but walking is the key.

I'm 11 days post-op, and still have gas pains referred to my shoulder, but they come and go. They make it so I can't even stand up straight - the only comfortable position is to lean over the kitchen counter or to sit down and lean forward. It seems to get worse whenever I drink anything but water, so I'm forcing my protein in right now. Walking is not the magic cure for me, so I wish people would stop giving me the standard, "just walk it off". I've googled and found a study reporting that some people who have lap-band have shoulder pain from 1 to 5 weeks or more after surgery, but the surgeons keep telling patients that it should go away in 48 hours. The research study is located here: http://www.core.monash.org/assets/documents/research-papers/2005-52.pdf Another message board from banded folks indicated some people get gas, and they take Gas-X (available as dissolvable tabs as well as strips), and it goes away. It's just simethicone, which I don't think can hurt you. Some people also indicated they were 4-5 months post-op and still had the occasional shoulder pain, and that it gets worse just after a fill. Other messages I've read say that once you go to eating full food, feeling a slight pain in your shoulder is your first sign that you're getting full and should stop eating (can't wait for that :-) The study I mentioned above indicated 2 possible factors that may cause it - one is prior abdominal surgery, and the other is damage to the diaphragm during the surgery itself. Best thing would be to make sure your doctor know. I have my appt with my surgeon on Friday and I plan to take a copy of that research paper with me. Beth

The gas pains are due to your system being empty for surgery and then you are putting stuff back in it. It's your systems response to the stress and rebooting, so to speak. As your system moves and works it will go away. Mild excercise (walking) and stopping pain medication (keeps system slow) will help it go away. Good luck!

Sometimes it takes up to 2-3 weeks for all the gas pains to go away. The more you walk and move around, the better it will be. I had to use some Mylicon drops to speed the process up for myself. Good Luck!
