Question:
3 lbs. week weight loss good at 6 weeks out, or slow?

I had surgery (Revision to RNY) 02/01/08. I lost 20 pounds quickly, then had a 2 week Plateau. I now seem to be losing about 1 pound every 2 - 3 days, perhaps 3 pounds a week. To me, that seems slow, I thought I would lose more per week. Can someone please tell me, is that slow, or average as compared to other people who have had RNY? Thanks!!!    — Gina S. You seem to be doing just fine...You have plateaus because your body needs to catch up with the rapid weight loss and tries to hold on because it thinks you are starving. You will hit many plateaus...but give it a year and you will see significant loss...and in two years you should be at your low weight. If it went too fast, I'd be worried. It seems slow to you right now because you might not see the difference in 20 pounds...Don't worry...measure yourself and you'll see you are losing inches...The pounds will catch up soon enough... Give yourself at least a year!

Hi, Gina. I don't really know that there is a normal. Everyone seems so different. I, too, wish I was losing quicker, but your experience with weight loss seems to mirror my own. At least we're losing weight!! I'm just a few weeks ahead of you. dana

I am almost 3 months out of surgery and lost so far a total of 45,5 lbs since then. that means an average of 3,75 lbs a week (12 weeks). So I am quite sure you are doing fine with your lose. Good luck to you! Greetings from Austria, Europe rina_mo

Hi Gina, I think you are doing wonderful. You said that you had a revision from a stomach stapling to an rny...was your original surgery still intact? If it was, than you already had the restrictive part of the surgery and now you are benefitting from the malabsorbtion part of the surgery (so make sure you get your supplements in). If your original surgery failed, then you are benefitting from both restriction and malabsorbtion (pouch size and gastric bypass). Take care of yourself and enjoy the ride. Your weight loss is great, I know it is hard not to think that you will be the one this doesn't work for, but it is working. keep us posted on your progress. AVERAGE - is an overstatement. Your body will lose as it sees fit. If you put yourself in a room with 20 of us, we will most likely have 20 different results. You are doing wonderful as long as you are using your tool and being true to yourself. Keep up the marvelous work. I don't know of any other weight loss plan that you can lose that much weight. CONGRATULATIONS on a job well done.

I got disapointed because I was going to the Gym evey day and working at it hard, and it seemed to slow my weight loss down, but it was mussle replacing fat. Everyone is different and be happy with your 3 pounds a week because there are others that are not doing that well. I Plateau for two weeks every month, but I now know the weight loss will return if we just dothe right things. Bust of sucess to you. You are doing just fine!

Gina, I am 4 years post op, original surgery, and I only lost 1-2 pounds per week the whole time. It seems slow, but I just praise God that I lost the weight, and it has stayed off! With a revision, I have heard tons of stories of NO weight loss at all, so I think you should count your blessings, and keep losing that 1-2 pounds per week/month. Just count your blessings, and be thankful for what you have. You may lose it slower than others, but that doesn't mean you are losing slow! Take care. Patricia P.

Hi Gina, don't worry you are doing very well! I didn't have RNY but the VSG (95% of my stomach removed), but I do know that plateaus are just a frustrating part of all weight loss. My doctor said that it is during plateaus that your body changes shape and you lose inches. It is really true. Hang in there! It is comin' off for sure! Pat

Think about it in the long term. At 12 lbs a month...in 10 mos you will have 120 lbs off...would you call that slow? I wouldn't!! You didn't put the weight on over night...you won't lose it overnight...just almost. Regards~
