Question:
3 days post-op, miss food desperatly

I am three days post-op from Gastric, and I want food so bad I can hardly stand it. I am not really hungry just want food. It is like an addict trying to fight the urge. What can help me?    — singing4Him36 (posted on January 6, 2008)

have a sugar free popsicle and follow your dr's advice. you can do it. we all been there too, don't mess with your mind or stomach, when your a few months down the line and the weight is dropping oof like crazy, you'll be glad u did. Brian

Sugar free popsicles are your only option at this point. Your classes, and your mental evaluation prior to surgery, should have made you aware you would feel this way. It will get better, just be patient.

Just know that it is in your head and you aren't really hungry. Know that you did not go through all of this to give into the head games to try and sidetrack your self. Pour yourself into some of your hobbies, invite a friend over when you feel the weakest. I am only a little of two weeks out it does get easier but you still worry of the self control. I find this site to be very helpful to me. Hang in there and the best of luck to you. If you have to talk to a specialist to help you through your tuff spots.

Hi Vickie, Congrats! on your new life. Just take it one day at a time. Just eat a sugar free popsicle or some sugar free jello. When you do finally begin to eat your food again, it won't have the same pleasure as it did before. I finally foundout(like i'm sure so many others did) we ave to eat to live not live to eat. Keep yourself busy. Go on a walk, do cross stitch, chew on some ice etc whatever it takes to keep from sitting there and realizing you can't have food unless you want to go to ER, etc....Good luck, God bless and welcome to the losing side! It does get better!

Congratulations on the changes you're making! You heard it from everyone else. Just gotta tough it out. You're probably too worn out to keep busy, but do your best, and have fluids as often as possible. It helps! Remember you could do serious damage and even wind up back in the hospital if you eat solid food, not to mention the agony you would go through the minute it hit your pouch. You're not ready. Hang in there, you didn't come this far to damage yourself now. Let us know if you need support. Good Luck!

I am 4 days post-op. The food hasn't hit me as of yet, but I make sure I am drinking or eating sugar free popsicles at all times. Remember all the side effects and believe in yourself. WE can get through this. WE have come this far in our decision now we just have to put the whole package together!! LaDonna

TIVO'ing thru the "endless" FOOD commercials on TV.......LMAO!!! I remember that being the WORST!!! You really take notice of how we are all TARGETED and BOMBARDED by food!!! It will get better, and sometimes a conselor can help with your "food grief". Remember we are here for you also!

I was the same way! Mentally Hungry! But this is good because it makes you realize when you are truley hungry which will help you in the future! What I did when I wanted food was take a walk or get on this website and look on the before and after photos so that I could see what I would one day look forward to! Good Luck! :)

DO NOT GIVE UP! Think of everything you have worked so hard for. Look at magizines with pictures of clothes you want to wear. Call a friend or family member for support. I will be in your shoes soon, 1/8 is my date. Just think of everything you will be EMPOWERING yourself to be do in the future. Food is sencondary and our lives come first!!!

oh do I know where you are at... HUGS, you will get through this, I know it doesn't seem possible but have faith. :) I wanted something so bad to chew on that I got one of my "baby plastic spoons" and chewed on it.... no I didn't swallow, but I knew I couldn't swallow that :) my thinking was, If my brain can play tricks on me well then I can play tricks right back :) It did help me with the fight to "chew on something".. Keep up with your protien, and water intake. also try sugar free jello. We all went thru it. It will be ok, take a walk ever day. and extent your distant a little bit every day. you can do this. IT will be worth it.

IT will be worth it. Also allow your self to morn the loss of food becuase your relationship with food is going to change as you start to loss and become healthier.

Vicki, I am 3 weeks post op. You can do this. Everyone has allready given you good advice. The sugar free popsickles are a life saver. The key is also to find something different to do with your brain, hands and mouth. It is not always easy but you will have good days and bad days. Just hang in there, Okay

Personally, I was looking forward to the legitimate break from food. I was looking forward to something working for a change. But at about 3 days post...like you..I got this very strange urge for of all things, a polish sausage. It was a huge urge. But my brain kicked in...pictured my stomach...this micro pouch that I had...and figuring out how a polish sausage would fit in there....also figuring the rawness of the new surgery. Then I realized this is what head hunger is...I laughed at myself...and promised myself that when I healed and got on regular food...I would have that polish sausage. Well...when that happened...I ordered a polish sausage...yuck..it wasn't even what I expected. After a bite, I gave it to hubby...who was in the process of gaining weight eating all the stuff I wouldn't eat anymore. Our tastes change...we just have to bypass those initial urges of what our heads tell us...after all our brains were not operated on..our stomachs and intestines were. So...it's a matter of thinking...what is reasonable? Laugh at yourself...that helps. Regards~

Hello, I am 11 days post op and I was so "head hungry" I considered chewing and spitting. It is a disgusting and desperate habit some develop, way to disgusting for me. I spoke to a friend who is a success after the lap RNY. He said he watched the Food channel all the time. He thought about how could adapt the foods to low fat dishes when the time came he could indulge a little. Sounded strange but strangely reading low fat WLS acceptable dishes sound so good and you won't believe the variety. With all of the low fat foods out there, I can't wait to challenge how low can I go, how low can I go? Of course without sacrificing taste. It will be an adventure. You know, cook a little, eat a little, save a little on food, spend a lot on clothes, its all good. I'm struggling right along with you. Contact me or anyone if you need to. Deniece

First of all, I'm about to get my butt kicked for this comment: Of course you're hungry! You have not had a "real" meal since at least the morning of the day before your surgery -- and if you are like some of the people that I've spoken to, maybe a day or two before that if you had to have pre-op tests NPO (on an empty stomach)! I know it's hard. I was in your shoes and CRYING 7 weeks ago. You may not be feeling well enough to get up, move around a lot or get yourself out of the house, but do yourself a favor and take up a hobby! Knitting, drawing, writing, all can be done with the tv on, and if you get involved, you pay less attention to the tv (and those pesky commercials). Spend more time on the computer --read posts from this and other support groups, go "fantasy shopping", whatever will take your mind off of your hunger. Get your liquids, protiens and vitamins in. Catch up on your rest -- allow yourself to nap. It seems like everyone says that they are not hungry after surgery. But that's not true. Some of us were STARVING after surgery. And right now, I understand that you don't care if it's a real hunger or in your head, you just need a solution. Some will say that you'll appreciate it when you see the pounds melt, but it's still too soon to believe that. I know! Do not watch the Food Network or any other cooking/food shows. That will NOT help. Do not read cookbooks right now or look for recipes on the internet. That WILL make you feel worse. If you are up to visitors, or talking on the phone, call/get together with friends. We're here for you and you will be ok. As my doctor explained it to me, right now it is important to stick with thin fluids because your pouch is healing and is not ready for thicker foods. Soon, you'll be able to add puddings, but that still may not seem satisfying. It may be as long as a month or 6 weeks before you feel like you are satisfied by what you can take in.....but it will be amazing when you realise just how LITTLE you can take in before you feel satisfied =) Hang in there and email me if you need a boost.
