Question:
Lactating?

This question is 'off topic' but I need to get a broad range of responses so please allow my question. I'm 3 years post op WLS and also several reconstructive surgeries, including a breast lift 2 years ago. I'm 55 years old and my son/daughter in law just had a baby boy. I'm very close to him and have had constant pain in only one breast ever since he was born. Doctor said it was mastitis but has never seen this in an older woman but usually in breast-feeding mothers. I've been on Keflex for 3 weeks... no response. Just spent 4 days in the hospital on a broader range antibiotic... no response. I'm wondering if the breast lift squeezed all the tissue together and the milk is stuck without a way to get out. I know this sounds odd. Please respond if you have any info that would help me. Breast is swollen, red and leaking 'fluid' (milk?) No cancer, cysts or abcesses present. Thanks for your time. what would being close to the baby have to do with the pains in your breast... Maybe you could be having sympathy pain. are you saying that being close to your grandson is bringing on lactation... never heard of that but it sounds like it could be a possibility.... don't know, but am anxious to see other responses.

Hey! vicki! When my daughter had her first son, one of my breast was so sore.. I couldnt hadly stand the pain... then when the baby would cry my one breast would leak milk... no lie... I went to my doctor and they thought I was crazy... but it happened and in a few months after that it stopped....She had 3 more kids but that never happened again after that one time... My daughter breast fed him also.... believe it or not but it is true . flo

Have you checked with your plastic surgeon who preformed your breast lift? Men have sympathy symptoms also so it is a possibility.

This is interesting... I was 53 yrs. old (going thru menopause) and doing an OB rotation in my nursing course. Since I had successfully breastfed three childeren, my fellow students who were much younger always would come to be for lactation problems. Wouldn't you know I started having regular periods with all the PMS symtpoms associated with regular monthly cycles.....fortunately for me, the rotation ended in seven weeks and soon after, my monthly cycles.

I can't answer your question about the breast lift. I have seen and read a lot of info on induced lactation. Induced lactation is when a non-pregnant person (man or woman) attempts to lactate through various methods (herbs, medication, etc.). So my guess is that you're lactating because being around your grandson causes your body/brain to release lactation causing hormones. There are also several medications that can cause lactation as a side effect. I've read that when a nursing mother has mastitis, she's supposed to let the baby suck the infection out..... I wonder if using a breast pump might help (but check with your doctor first). Good luck... feel free to email me privately.

My aunts breast started leaking and she found out she had breast cancer. Maybe it needs to be checked again.
