Question:
Is it normal to get sick everytime I eat ?

Hi, My name is Laurie and I'm three and a half weeks Post Op (Lap Rny). I've really been struggling with food. Every time I eat I throw up. Now I'm only consumeing maybe one or two Teaspoons at a time. I'm not trying any solids at this time. I'm afraid to at this point. Crackers seem to be my best bet at this point. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm down 28 pounds so far.    — LAURIE W. (posted on June 6, 2001)

I experienced the same thing on a regular basis early on post-op. As time went on I still felt somewhat ill after I ate , but the symptoms weren't as severe and in time they dissipated altogether. I'm almost 1 year post-op Lap BPD/DS. Good Luck !! It will get better with time; also watching what you eat....certain types of food would trigger a sick feeling in my tummy.

Laurie, please talk to your Dr about this. I had a similar experience between weeks 2 and 3. My Dr. sent me for an endoscopy. I had a stricture from the new pouch to the intestine and nothing was getting thru but liquids. They fixed it in 15 minutes. I had a sore throat for 2 days, no big deal, now I'm doing great!!! -Katie

Hello Laurie! I'm 9 weeks out from my Lap RNY, and I was the same way. I'll be honest, things didn't really look up until about week 7 or so. My turning point came when I stopped trying to eat any type of meat or fish. I doubleded up on my protein drinks and left the meat alone. The vomiting stopped. I wish I had more advice for you, but all I can offer is my profile and my understanding. 'Been there, did that', and I survived to tell about it! :-) Best of luck! Feel free to email me if you'd like.~~Laurie Lorenz

Laurie, this was not my experience. I am 6 weeks past surgery and I have not thrown up at all. My stomach felt "sour" for the first 4-5 weeks but not like I was going to throw up. My surgeon did tell me today, though, that nausia was fairly common in the early weeks. Still, it can't be good to be that sick. I would contact your surgeon's office.
