Question:
Does anyone have statistics of what percentage gain their weight back after GBS?

I know that 5 of us at work have had the WLS and ALL of us have had weight gain from moderate to excessive. I never had a problem with weight for the first 6 years after surgery (was a size 2-4 - down 150 pounds to 128)- have been active and on the same food since day one, but the weight keeps coming on. It's ridiculous how hard it is to loose, as bad as before the surgery, if not worse. I'm interested in knowing how many people are at (or within 20 pounds of) goal weight 10 years from surgery date.    — kydoll (posted on May 9, 2011)

I don't think you should be gaining weight like that if you are sticking to the original regimen. Have you had your blood work done lately? That may be the clue.

Just had a physical 2 weeks ago. If it were just me, I'd think it was me, but every person I know that has has GBS is gaining back starting about year 6 - 7 after surgery.

Sadly, I can report the same thing. I started at near 280; I'm only 5'1"; "only" went down to 160; leveled out at about 172. I looked great and wore a size 10 which was fine/wonderful/acceptable, etc.:). After a few years, I was at 192 and still looked really good. Had a setback with knee replacement and then a back fusion and from that point on I am a slave to everything I eat AGAIN. I struggle to stay at 210. I've had my pouch checked and it is still quite small and I get full very quickly but I continue to gain wait if I don't almost starve myself. The gained wait is horrid looking, way worse than before I had GBS; now it looks like rhinoceros skin and I feel horrid and ugly (something I never did before). I have a vacation to go on with my husband and all my grown children and grandchildren in early August and I am humiliated and can't even vocalize how much I'd just love to stay home and hide. Does that answer your question:). Sorry, you asked it on the wrong day.

I only had mine 1 year ago. Went from 247 to 124. I know several people who are 5-10+ years out and only a couple of them has gained more than 10-20 lbs. Now that I have had it, it seems like everywhhere I go someone has had it. I also have 2 aunts that have had it 6-7 years ago and neither has gained any weight back. Keep your chin up!!! Go see your dr. and the dietian and see what they can do to help you out. They last thing you need is to let it continue and let it get you down and get you depressed. We all know how that feels. Good luck to you!!

I had GBP in 2002, and have now gained back 57 lbs. Going in to have a revision on June 28th, 2011.

Hi Alicia--Curiously, in our cases at the office, yes, we all had the same surgeon. Does anyone know if insurance will pay for a revision if you haven't gained all the weight back?
