Question:
I know we can't drink before or after a meal but what about after one of those awful

protein drinks?    — nnbama (posted on April 7, 2010)

the problem with drinking water with your protein is 1.it swells your pouch and 2. flushes out the protein too fast not allowing the max absobtion. So wait 30 min. before you drink then drink your protein then 30min, more then drink away. This is what my Post op booklet says good luck

Greetings. Congratulations on making the decision to have RNY this last February. Your health will thank you. Awful protein drinks? Yep, many of them are simply awful and remain simply awful even when the taste-buds cooperate and let us know their true flavors. But, do your research gal, and you will ferret out the good ones. I've found Isopure (through Vitamin Shoppe, or www.VitaminShoppe.com) to be superior -- as long as you can tolerate sweet-tasting (but no sugar) protein drinks. They have a wide variety and their ingredients are loaded with good things for our bodies. Because I've had an RNY and have done my own extensive research on what is good for my body, I know that I will require to get my protein from protein drinks for the rest of my life and to rely on eating foods simply to exercise my chewing muscles. If you question this, look at some of my postings at my support group site (www.ObesityHelp.com/group/BellevueWA. I'm 5+ years post-op, lost 150 lbs. and have kept it off through conscientious attention to many things, especially my over-all nutrition. The protein drinks in most places are simply horrible. Yet, besides isopure, another great source is Unjury. I can't speak to their chocolate, strawberry, etc. sugary-tasting protein drinks; but, they certainly do know how to market to get our attention. Do check out my research which I published at my support group site for what you need to look for in getting a good protein drink. Unjury, sells a lot because of their advertising; however, it is not as good quality as Isopure or Any Whey (another one). However, Unjury does have an excellent chicken-flavored protein drink which is mighty tasty. They also make an excellent non-flavored protein drink (doesn't have the nutritional punch as Any Whey (another non-flavored protein drink) or Isopure (which only has the sugary-tasting protein drinks -- but have a whole bunch of flavors) have, but it is great to have a choice for adding protein to regular foods. I mix Unjury or Any Whey unflavored protein powder in my green smoothie (greens and fruits Vita-Mixed together). you can't even taste the protein yet there are 50 grams of protein in my green smoothies. Yes, I do know that our bodies can only absorb 25 grams or so of protein at any one time; but, I am not wasting 25 grams of protein needlessly. Because I had RNY my body is 50% malabsorptive, so my 50 grams becomes 25 grams because of the malabsorption issue. In the past, I've used Any Whey to add protein punch to my cottage cheese, yogurt, rye bread, etc. with excellent results. So, do stop your complaining about awful protein mixtures. Try these and see if you don't agree that they are most palatable. If they are not, it is your responsibility since you chose to have bariatric surgery to correct a serious weight issue to ferret out and sample a wide variety of protein drinks until you find ones you will like. Additionally, you are at the very beginning of your new journey where you cannot rely on your taste-buds to correctly determine if something is good or not. Your tastes will change and what tastes great today probably won't tomorrow, and there again, if something tastes like crud today, it'll probably taste great tomorrow. I was that way with eggs. I couldn't stomach eggs in any form for over 5 years. Yet, here I am, now having 2 cage-free hard-boiled eggs each and every day and finding them (at long last) to be mighty tasty. Mighty tasty indeed! Excellent source of Amega-3 fatty acids, and good cholesterol as well but poor choice for protein since each egg only has 6 grams of protein even if every little gram of protein is 100% bioavailable for our body's use. Yet, those 2 jumbo cage-free eggs really keep me satisfied all day long. Well, those eggs and the green smoothies keep me most satisfied so I don't graze and my hair, skin, nails, energy, vitality, etc. is pretty darn good. And yes, my angel wings are finally lessening along with the celulite on my legs. 'Bout time! It's been over 5 years! So, even at an advanced age (72) skin can still tighten up. Enjoy and become passionate about this journey. You will survive this "awful protein-tasting period" you really will. So, drink the swill and know that next week your taste-buds might cooperate and let you know how great the stuff really is. Just like drinking while eating, drinking while having your protein drink will only flush it away & be replaced with water. Nothing to gain by that. Stick to the plan your surgeon's office set up for you. By doing that, you will succeed. Good luck.

I suggest trying a differrent brand of protien shakes, add ice and put in the blender with some frozen strawberries to make it better tasting and more filling. I use Premier Protien Chocolate Shake, 30 grams of protien and 1 gram of sugar. I get this pre-mixed at costco. Good Luck, Hope this helps.

I will take a swig of decaf tea & then pop a sugar free mint in my mouth. Might also want to rise your mouth out, spit & then brush your teeth. Hope this is of some help! Lorraine
