I'm now surfing on into the pureed soup stage and I would love some advice on what kind of canned soup purees the best.    — origamistar (posted on March 26, 2009)

hi there- soups are one of my fav foods, whether canned or homemade, and truth be told, even now 5 yrs post op, would rather have soups over anything else. As to the kind, i pureed all soups, from cream mushroom, to myt fav clam chowders, but i took out all the potatoes from all of them, didnt need the white carbs, just the good flavors. I made my own soups because I could control the sodium, carbs and made sure I bllended them with lots of dense protein, the most important. I used sodium free tomatoes, lots of cabbage, the good carbs, lots of leeks, onions, jalipeno peppers because i am a good flavor junkie, minimal carrots, lots of string beans, etc. Go to Allrecipes.com, type in soups, and a whole other world of soups will tickle your fancy. Every recipe can be adapted to our eating protocol. Use your imagination, be creative and who knows, you may be the next person everyone wants your personal recipe for great soups. There is one particular soup, " Healing cabbage soup", on that web site, that is to die for, another is " Split pea with rosemary soup" that is still a staple in my house. The eggplant supper soup is another great one filled with fresh goodness. Add or delete to your tastes. If you limit yourself to canned, you are looking at mega amounts of sodium which you should stay away from, it impedes wt loss. Try the beer roAsted lime chicken, puree it, and OMG, delish. Hope this helps. Get creative, think outside the campbell box to the next generation- minus the pasta, potatoes and rice- think leafy green veges, ground white turkey meat, chicken, shell fish like shrimp etc to give it good flavors. Good luck Cindi M.D. retired - 230 lbs 5 yrs post op

I like the Campbells Cream of Chicken Soup in a can. You pull the lid off of it, heat it for 2 minutes in the can, put the lid back on it and sip through the lid. Costs about $1.48 a can at Walmart. This is also not as thick as regular Cream of Chicken Soup.

I also have fallen in love with soups. I make egg drop soup at home and LOVE the new V8 cream soups.

check out the soup recipes on www.bariatriceating.com. As for store bought, I love Campbell's bean and bacon (watch the sodium though. I don't know if it comes in low sodium

When I was at that point I really liked any of the Progresso soups as they still had lots of good flavor when they were pureed. Especially Chicken Noodle, Meatball, Italian Wedding. Usually was getting 3 meals from 1 can. Sounds like you are doing well. Keep up the good work.

You won't believe what I did at the puree stage. I had a Lean Cuisine salmon dinner. I knew salmon is loaded with protein so I cooked the whole dinner, threw it in my blender and pureed the whole thing. It didn't look real pretty but it was pretty tasty.

I absolutely loved making eggdrop soup from low sodium chicken broth and bringing it to a boil and droping an egg in and scrambling it. It is still a comfort food for me. I also added pure unflavored protein to it. To give me more protein.

I make my own soups! I am a HUGE soup fan like Doodles! But I can control the hidden fats/sodium and carbs in canned stuff...I start with a chicken carcass and boil it with veggies (carrots, celery, onion for a bsic chicken stock. After that I add pureed chicken and beans and the veggies or cream for a creamy soup... beans, lentils and soy beans or textured vegetable protein (TVP) or miso/tofu ....My canned soup suggestions are anything by "Amy's", Trader Joe's...Progresso...Split Pea and ham, Black Bean Soup, Lentil and Minestrone...Chili soup...You can puree the soups if they have any chunks as well! I love LOVE LOVE tortilla soup (no tortillas) It's so delicious! Lok for a recipe online! It's my family favorite lately! But you really can make some really fast and easy as well as healthy and lean soups starting with a basic broth or stock either homemade as I do with the chicken carcass or in a box or can of stock (Beef, chicken or veggie ) makes GREAT soups!
