Please READ(about gall bladder)
Did anYone NoT take Actigall to prevent the GB from going bad, have issues with their Gall bladder, after time?? Im wondering how high the percent is of RnYs that never took this med to prevent a bad GB, that lost weight and still remained ok....can YOU help? — littleguzla (posted on March 13, 2008)

I have not taken it, but I was interested in what others might have to say.
My support group is at the hospital every month and we often send in
questions and they have a profession come and answer the questions, so I am
going to make an inquire about Actigall. I know that two in my group have
had to return for Galblatter sergery following ther RNY WLS.

I did not take it and I am 4 1/2 years post of RNY and gallbladder is still
doing good!

Actigall is to help dissolve gallstones as they/if they develop. it's like
anything else, some people don't take it and do fine, but the percentage of
people that do develop stones after RNY is very high due to the fast wt
loss. the point is, the medication is a preventative measure. there are
also people that take the med and still end up having to have their
gallbladder removed. your surgeon should be able to give you an exact
percentage. it's a fairly cheap medication, available in generic and you
only have to take it for like 6 months. hope this helps...Holly

Obese people face a high risk of developing gallbladder disease and people
who lose weight quickly also have a higher risk of developing gall bladder
disease. So, whether you take Actigall or not during the time of your peak
weight loss, doesn't necessarily mean that you have eliminated all risk of
gallbladder disease. In our support groups, which I have helped to run for
over 4 years, we probalby had about 10%-20% of the patients need to have
their gallbladders removed-- and none of us took Actigall.

I was given it, didn't take it and 4 mo after WLS I had to have my gall
baldder removed. Better to be safe than sorry!

My surgeon did not perscribe any medication for gallbladder. I had surgery
in Jan. 07 and in May 07 I had to have my gallbladder removed. My MIL said
for years that I was having problems with it, but I did not believe her. So
I can not say that surgery was the deciding factor with the gallstones but
I am sure it helped it out some. Good luck

Hi there I wasn't given Actigall after surgery, but so many people told me
I should have been. I am 11 months out and had my gallbladder out last
month. Not fun. I feel it put me behind a little bit. Good luck to you!!!!

I asked for Actigall, my Dr. prescribe it no problem, took it for 3 months
post-op. It has been almost five years since, no problems unless I test
the waters and eat what i shouldn't. It doesn't hurt to take it...

My doctor routinely prescribes this to all patients to take for 6 months
after surgery. I am 10 months out so far and no gallbladder problems so
far. I say better safe than sorry!
