Hi Emma, I had my surgery March 2, and by May 7th I was told to stop all protein supplements. My nutritionist told me I should be able to get all my protein in my food by that time. However, I had a whole cupboard of different protein powders, and I wasn't going to throw them away. It's a good thing, too... because I frequently get "stuck" and end up throwing up a whole meal, which means that I won't get in all my protein for the day....which means I get to have a protein shake! That makes me happy, because I like them. Anyways, you should keep a log of what you're eating (including the protein content of each food) and once you have a few days worth of logs under your belt, then check with your nutritionist to see how much longer you need to supplement.

Not all protein shakes are created equal in taste! Our CY-Creek Hospital support group had a protein suppliment tasting at one of our meetings. There are many different kinds out there. There are some good, low carb/low cal protein bars (Bariatric Advantage, that advertises on this site, has some meal replacement bars with high protein), some shots that you just drink, some pretty good protein drinks like Iso-pure, plus all kinds of recipes for protein shakes and ice cream using protein powder at theworldaccordingtoeggface.com. You will probably need additional protein sources indefinately, but there are lots of different (yummy) ones, just keep your eyes and ears open and be sure to read the labels. If you have a support group, have everybody bring their favs to share!

Once you can start eating your required amount of solid protein you should be able to stop the shakes. Talk with your doctor and follow his advice.

Just say NO to protein shakes. Don't worry about how much protein your getting the firdt couple years out. Worry more about what you can eat and what you can't. I mean you need to eat for this surgery to work. Eat 6 small meals a day. Eat what your body will tolerate. Chew your food well. Here is a list of healthy protein to eat. http://lowcarbdiets.about.com/od/whattoeat/a/highproteinfood.htm

You will always need your protein shakes forever!!! All the answers I read below, I cannot believe they are saying not to drink them. You cannot get the protein your body needs from just eating food. You need to drink the protein drinks and in that way you get all the good vitamins and nutrients and the good protein. Keep drrinking them and spruce them up. This is what I drink every day and my hair quit falling out and I lost so much more weight and feel like a million bucks. I have lost 170 lbs in 10 months. The more protein you drink the better off you are. I use 4 scoops of the strawberry UNJURY protein mix (1 scoop is 20 grams) with 3 cans of the PURE PROTEIN strawberry flavor they are 35 grams of protein with 32 oz of water and then I puree frozen strawberries or 1 yogurt strawberry (Yoplait blue) and voila! I mix it all up in jug then pour into bottles and drink all day long. It is a fantastic shake that I live off of. Try it before you knock it. I get estimated around 200 grams of protein daily. GREAT!!! Getting skinny in FL... Good luck to you and post your comments or email me. thanks!!!
