Question:
GI seriers done today, findings strange

Im 3 yrs out wls, been having severe pain on and off for the past 2 yrs, starts below ribs center feels like someone is tightening a rope around me, I sweat, feels hard to breath, lasts from 1-10 minutes. Comes 2x a day or maybe not for 6 months, strange. Cat skan normal. GI series today with lower bowel focus also, the radiologist was showing me how the small bowel thats connected to my pouch was working overtime, he said it was working really hard, he couldnt understand it, he said there was no blockage, I go back to my surgeon tuesday, just wanted to know if anyone has heard of this,,, Im wondering if thats the root of my intermitten excrusiating pain..... maybe my bowel is going into spasms or something..... thanks for any and all replies,, Amy    — Amy Hoffman (posted on December 1, 2005)

I'm not a doc but I work for my WLS doc. It sounds as though it might be adhesions. I would go back to your doc and ask about it.

I have this in the middle of the night, have had for about 2 yrs (I'm 11 yrs post-op). I was given Levsin (rx anti-spasmodic) for another reason, but I tried them with this and it worked. The docs can find nothing and I'm not particularly sharp when it jolts me awake at 3am. Another thing I am doing is taking 1000mg Pantothenic Acid (B-5) daily and that has helped tremendously. Been taking them about 60 days and have only had 2 spasms total, vs 2-3 PER NIGHT. It helps smooth muscle behave. I'm not a huge believer in just adding vites (believe it or not), but it was worth a shot to me as that pain-worse-than-labor and inability to breathe scare my husband and me both senseless. In the meantime, obviously pursue it wherever your docs take you with it, but you can mention it to them and whether it works or not may be another piece of info they can use in their diagnostic arsenal for you.

Hi I'm 2yrs out and have had this same problem. Very painful. I've seen 5 different GI doctors with no complete resolution. Lots of tests, ok, I am having bowel spasms and esophagual spasms for sure. I have ulcers, gastritis, Crohns disease. I discovered by myself the pain and spasms are much better if I do not eat dairy or beef. I have to do enemas daily or the pressure builds in there and the pain is unbearable. They tell me I have nerve damage that controls the rectum. I really hope you find some relief soon and I hope you don't get the same run-a-round I have gotten-- and it is "not all in your head". Please don't hesitate to email me if you need some support. Anti spasmotics and muscle relaxers helped me quite a bit. Best of luck to you Nut

Hi again Amy, also try ice pack right on the area in pain, that also helps me. Nut

Be very careful. I had this same thing for 2 1/2 years. I found out I had a hole/ hernia in my messanary wall. This is a clear tissue that kind of holds your intestines together. I agreed to explorotory surgery to see what was wrong and that is what they found. My small bowel was going into the hole and being strangled. They could not see it with the gi series. This is very dangerous and often mis diagnosed.
