Question:
How much weight can I lose after surgery

Does the amount of weight that you lose right after surgey have to do with your height and what you weigh before surgery? I am 5'2" and 260lbs.Most weight is in my lower belly, butt, and hips.I would like to get down to 130lbs..How fast could I see that weight?.What can I expect to lose a month to three months post? How soon after surgery can you start a exercise program?    — Debbie S. (posted on January 13, 2002)

Everyone's weight loss is different. You can see my progress by clicking on my profile. But again, we are all different. I got to goal at 11 months. My sister is at 13 months and wants to lose another 30 pounds. It's really individualized. You can (and should) begin walking immediately for exercise. I wasn't allowed to lift anything over 10 pounds for six weeks after my Lap RNY. That was the only restriction. Also click on the "check BMI" section of this site and it will show you a standard chart of progression. Even that chart says that everyone if different!

Check my profile, I got to goal in just under 6 months. But everyone is different. Most loose 75% of their excess above chart weight. The heavier you are the faster the initial loss but if your a super morbid its less likelu you will loose it all. In ANY case you will be healthier and happier once you loose most of your excess weight. Men typically loose faster than woman. This explains some of my big looser status.

Debbie, I started at 5'4 and 280 and within 11 months I was below goal weight and weighing in at 113. I gained back 7 pounds on purpose because I thought that it was alittle much (as well as the family telling me I looked awful) which took me almost another year to gain back. I have been stable at between 120 and 124 for over a year now depending on the time of month. As for exercising, I started wayyy too soon (at 3 weeks in a gym) and have a huge hernia to prove it. Walking is wonderful and can be done from the day you get home but I would certainly listen to the docs and not do anything strenuous for "at least" 6 weeks if not longer. Good luck to you.

Concerning canculations of anticipated early postop weight loss, I was told it is a mathematical formula. For example, preop I had 127 pounds to lose to reach my ideal weight. By my 2 week check-up I was to have lost 7% (of the 127) and that is exactly what I had lost. At my 6 weeks checkup I should have lost 10-15% (of the 127). I think anyone can use this easy mathematical formula to figure out early weight loss expectations.
