Question:
Is is normal not to have a BM 6 days post op?

I'm on clear liquids for 2wks, i haven't had a BM. Is this normal since everything is liquid and i am urinating it all out?? Thank You for your responses.    — Sunny4x4chick (posted on July 14, 2002)

I don't know how normal it is, but it took me about a week to be able to go to. But, I am now as normal as before, just not as often now.

I am not sure what is normal but I finally had to do a suppository after the 7th or 8th day and everything has been fine since. If you have concerns contact your doctor.

It took me almost 2 weeks before I was able to go. Is it normal? It doesn't sound too uncommon. :o)

I had one at about 5 days out. I had asked the nurse at the hospital about this and she said if I hadn't had one at about 5 or 6 days to call the doctor.

I was in the hospital for 6 days and after about 2 days, my Dr. ordered a supository everyday until I had a BM. When it finally happened, it was more like water, but my Dr. seemed to be happy with that.

It took me about 8 or 9 days after surgery. Remember, you are on liquids, there is not much there.

It took seven days for me. On day six I was feeling "desperate", so I helped it along by making a homemade pot of beef vegetable soup, which included short ribs, beef broth, carrots, zucchini, cabbage, and potatoes, etc. I cooked the soup 3 hours until tender, removed the beef, and took an handheld immersion blender and blended it up and drank it for several small "meals". This concoction gave me enough "fiber" to do the trick, naturally without suppositories or Milk of Magnesia. The potassium in the vegies seemed to boost my energy, too.
