Question:
When I eat chicken such as breast or beef such as steak, it feels like stones

in my stomach. Is this from not chewing well, or is it that I can no longer tolerate regular meat. When I eat chicken that has gravy or has been processed in some way, no problems.    — Susan F. (posted on December 5, 1999)

What you experience is typical. I have found it to be true for years (RNY GB 12 years ago). Think of how hard your teeth work on the meat, then think of your very small stomach! Anyway, mixing the meat with something else does make it go down easier. Just remember to do that, and chew it up good!

I had the same problem up til about my 3rd month post-op. I did not give up on meat, however, because I wanted to be sure to get my protein--and you need to do the same! Try eating smaller pieces and chew them thoroughly. Also, it is very helpful to eat your meat with some kind of sauce or mixed in a casserole or some other dish. Adding extra "lubrication" will help it go down. Just experiment and you will find something that works!

Try shaved meats from the deli. Ham is do-able, so is the roast beef from Arby's.

Hey Susan: One suggestion I have is to cut your meat into the size of the eraser on top of a pencil. I do find it easier to take with gravy. Also, there is less taste in these small bites. It has worked so far with me though I have not tried hamburger yet. Good luck!
