Question:
I am 11 days post-op and I am sick, literally sick of liquids. I want to eat

I feel like I need something solid or at least soft foods. My doctor wants me on liquids for another 10 days, right now I am so sick that I am not getting in anything. I can't drink water or drink my shake. I have been eating saltines and they make me feel better. Please anyone with any advice, HELP. Thanks in advance. Also, I was fine up until yesterday, weird.    — [Anonymous] (posted on December 16, 2001)

My Doc is just like yours he has us on 3 long weeks of liquids. But, I think if liquid are not going down, you should let your doctor know. Some people have closed off openings and need an endoscopy procedure. Not a big deal, but that is what is sounds like if water isn't going down. Call right away in the morning!

Try to do what your Dr says. This is important for your recovery and your raport with him...but if you have to "cheat" cheat with something that wont hurt you. Scratchy crackers might. Try taking your fat free Ckn broth and "drop" egg thu a fork make some egg drop soup. Try finding some sugar free stuff to "cheat" with. Eat soft things. Diet pudding Diet Jello...be very careful.

I don't know what kind of surgery you had, but I had an open RNY proximal, and my doctor let us start eating soft foods like cottage cheese and deli meat at 2 weeks out. You could probably "cheat" a little and get away with it if pure liquids are boring you to death.

I understand completely what a hard time you are having. During my clear liquid phase I cheated with sugar free fudgesicles, strained spaghetti sauce, and other things that really didnt belong. Fact is I created my own post op diet one carefully chosen food at a time. If you know your going to cheat be rsponsible about it. Soft liquidy foods at first, chewed to nothingness. If done carefully I dont think its dangerous, after all some surgeons put post ops on regular food before leaving the hospital. Remember tiny bites of soft food and NOTHING hard. Dont end up like one post op here who ate beef jerky and ended up in the hospital. That was a very bad food choice for less than a week out!

Hang in there, it gets much better after you get past this liquid faze. Clear liquids were the hardest for me, the chicken broth, apple or grape juice diluted etc. Regular liquids at the 2 week point were a little easier because you can have strained soups sugarfree hot cocoa (which is amazingly good), and sugar free pudding. I tried every sugarfree pudding they make and that really helped. I got very tired of the sweet taste of all of it too. To help with getting your protein in add nonfat dry milk podwer to the pudding or hot cocoa etc. I wish there were more suggestions but at this point there aren't any. The sacrifices you make now will be worth it as you start to lose more and feel better. Good luck.

I KNOW ALL doc's are different, however, I think you could eat cottage cheese ( which noramally I could take it or leave it ) but now it tastes so yummy!!! I am 5 day out and I'm suppose to eat 1oz of meat( like deli turkey, tuna, scrambled egg) 4 X aday. Why don't you try a few bites of one of these.

NOT advocating cheating but a runny smothie can be tasty. Strawberries blended with ice, cottage cheese, and crystal light tastes good. Any non citrus fruit will do.

I had the same problem...until I got creative!! I am 8 days post-op and trying some different things. Try whipping about 1/2 cup low-fat cottage cheese with a melted Dole Fruit Juice Strawberry Popscicle. DELICIOUS!! Campbells Cream of Mushroom Soup with Roasted Garlic is VERY good.. just process it until all the mushrooms are VERY fine and enjoy.. Look for ways to make the Full Liquids phase interesting and delicious. Don't forget about your Protein requirements, though. Try incorporating your protein supplement into your other foods, if possible. I know that this is the hardest part of the whole process. I want nothing more right now than a big green salad with a little balsamic vinegar - but know I have to wait. It took ALL THIS TIME to put this weight ON... the least I can do is give my body a few weeks to heal properly to get it OFF..!! Good luck, and God Bless. I know you'll make it..!!

i am not sure when you posted this message, but i am, also, 11 days postop. and yesterday i felt the same way. my husband let me gripe and complain and basically vent. then we went to the store and scaled the aisles for what i could have. then we came home and made vegetable soup so that i could have the juice for my buillion base cups. also had popsicles, new jello flavors and new bottled water flavors. good luck to you
