Question:
I need you opinion

11 mo. Post Op. I am thinking about trying the Adkins Diet. I would like to know everyone's experience with it. Would you recommend it or not and if is alright for me to do now Post surgery.    — L. N. (posted on May 8, 2000)

Actually, the Atkins Diet is very similar to how you probably have been eating as far as high protein consumption, also in the limiting of carbohydrates. The only thing I would be careful with would be eating a very high amount of fat since after this type of surgery, RNY or DS, high fats can bother our new GI configurations and alterations. But I think there are some serious misconceptions about the Atkins Diet just as there are serious misconceptions about WLS. Atkins advocates high protein, Low (that's LOW, not NO carbohydrates), drinking 8 glasses of water a day, but he allows any amount of fat. That is really the only difference and thus, the only caveat for post op people. Think about what all the doctors and nutritionists tell us, Protein, protein, protein ad nauseum, no sugar, and lots of water. Sounds like a (modified Atkins to me). Go for it. The other thing you might want to check into is the Weigh Down Diet and the Weigh Down Workshop. This is a Christian based concept of eating which is fabulous-don't be mislead, though, that only Christians or spirtual people can do it or read it. The basic premise is that all food is good, stop trying to make the food behave. YOU behave and treat the food differently (what's wrong with a brownie? Nothing. What is wrong is eating a whole pan of them, get the picture?) This is just a suggestion to think about.

Just wanted to add my 2 cents worth... My Dr. actually recommends the Dr. Adtkins diet for his post-op's. and as you were previously advised this diet we are advised to eat is actually very similar to the Adtkins diet. I can't eat alot of saturated fats... just does not feel good going down and then coming out the other end... (so to speak) but I do eat some of the healthier fats... if there is such a thing :-) and I have done pretty well so far! 142lbs gone forever --- almost 7 months post-op.
