Question:
I've heard you can get a card for use in a resturant to order from the kids menu.
Normally I would just take leftovers home, but I'm going on a trip for 2 weeks, driving from Calif. to Arkansas and I don't want the food to go to waste. We also will be eating at some buffets and I hate to pay full price. Has anybody heard of these cards letting resturants know about the surgery and the stomach will not accomodate that much food? — hannah R. (posted on April 17, 2000)

Hannah: You are correct. My surgeon gives out a laminated card which simply
states "The bearer of this card has had surgery which permanently
reduced stomach size and therefore limits the amount of food he/she can
consume. Please allow him/her to order half portions of adult menu entrees
or from the children's menu. If you have questions, please contact . . .
(surgeon name and R.N. name and phone # inserted)" I haven't tried it
yet.

Hello, The only people I know of who got the cards, got them from their
physician. Some physicians routinely give them to gastroplasty patients.

I got a card from my surgeon. I was sceptical about using it at first but
have now used it twicw at 2 different Golden Corals.
No questions were asked and they gave me buffet at children's price.
It saves a few bucks. Lou Ann

My DOctor doesn;t have this deal. ANy one know how else one could get the
card?

My surgeon, Dr. Champion, routinely gives out one of these cards, though I
have yet to use it. Call your surgeon and ask for documentation of your
gastroplasty. Good luck.

THe dietician that works with my Dr. gace me her business card with the
info written on the back of it. I haven't needed to use it. As soon as I
mention I have it they usually allow me to order the kids, or sr. portion.

Hannah, my Dr. mailed me a laminated restraunt card about 2 wks after
surgery. {along with an emergency medical card with a picture of my new
anotomy and description of the surgery} I haven't had to use it yet, as
each time I want to order something off the childrens menu, or share my
hubby's dinner, We just tell them I had surgery and can't eat that much.
Works every time!! Good Luck.

I have not had to use my card that my Dr. gave me; and My hubby and me do
frequently go out to eat... I usually eat something that is either off of
the appetizer menu (if they have anything that isn't fried of breaded or
too fatty) I usually avoid the kids' menu because they serve more fatty
foods, but I do sometimes select foods from the Sr. menu; then sometimes
depending on the foods you can order 1/2 the amount and they (the servers)
seem pretty willing to work with you, specially when I tell them what I had
done!

I didn't get my card until I was advanced to the stage where I was able to
eat "regular" food. Your surgeon may give it to you then. And I
don't usually have to show my card to anyone, most people take my word for
it. Although I have had a manager at Shoney's where I live give me a hard
time about it...But other than that particular incident, I have had no

Hannah (which is a beautiful name, also my daughters). BTC gives there
cards out during the PAT testing. To my knowledge most doctor's have these
cards if your's doesn't please let me know.

Hannah, I haven't been eating at buffets but I routinely order off the
child's menu. I don't volunteer ANY information. I simply ask if I may
order from the children's menu. Not one waiter or waitress has turned me
down. It may luck it may the sweet smile I paste on my face when I ask
them. Whatever it is, it works. I've also ordered half portions with no
explanation. I simply presume that *they'll* presume I'm not very hungry.
