Question:
Surgical glue and showering

I am 5 days post op from my revision. My doctor used surgical glue on theincision this time and no staples! It is so much more comfortable. First time around, my incision drained and was open for 4 mos then formed a big keloid scar. My scar is thin now and no drainage at all! I forgot to ask about care of it this time. Can anybody help me? I just asked if I could take a shower and doctor said yes but with my back facing the water. Does that mean I can't get it wet at all? Last time I was allowed to let the water run down the incision and just dry it off afterwards. I am afraid I will make the glue un stick. Don't want that. Does it just go away on it's own? Do the internal sutures wither away? Please if anyone knows, let me know. Thanks! Oh, and yes, transected pouches do feel differently. They get full easier! Right now I am clear liquids still.    — Marilyn C. (posted on October 21, 2001)

Hi Marilyn, I also had the surgical skin glue when I had surgery in January. It is hard to remember back that far, but I was able to get it wet. When you stand with your back to the shower, this lessens the amount of water and also the force of the water on your incision. I don't remember any special care, I just dried it thoroughly. Something I do remember is that the glue will get flakey and peel off when it is ready. It seems like I had that glue on me for at least 6 weeks. It just kept peeling and peeling.... I love my scar. It is very narrow, with just a small area at the top where it is a little wider. Yes, the internal sutures just disappear. Glad to hear that your revision went well. I LOVE my transected pouch. 1/8/01 263-131. Shelley

Thanks for your response Shelley. I think the glue must be the newest thing and it seems the best for me. Not many people have had it but I think if they knew what I know they would request it. I can move so much better and don't have the annoying pulling and pinching of the staples that I had in #1 surgery. If it doesn't open any, my scar will be thin too. There is a world of difference in surgical glue and staples!

Getting it wet shouldn't be a problem. I was even allowed to go swimming as soon as I got home. I washed my incision 3 times a day. It helps it heal.
