Question:
Hiccups---HELP

I'm 6 days post op open rny and feeling great but I got the hiccups about 5 hrs ago and have tried everything I can think of to make them go away. It wasn't too bad at first but now the pain is really getting to me...please any ideas on what to do...    — Jennifer H. (posted on September 20, 2001)

Well....I have to tell you that hiccups were a usual occurrence for me the first couple weeks post-op. In fact, I just had another bout last night (at 3 mos.) and I hate them. It's normal from what I understand. Unfortunately my old fashioned remedy, eating a spoonful of sugar, can be no more! The only things I've found to help are time and sometimes drinking a little water. I don't know how that gets the air out, but it appears to work often. Good luck.

When I was a child (and that was long, long ago) my mother would give me a mixture of hot water, a few drops of peppermint extract (the kind you use in cooking), and sugar; it worked for me then. Substituting an artificial sweetener for the sugar would be necessary, but it might help. Oh yes, it had to be sipped slowly. HTH Nina

Take a deep breath and 1 gulp of water before exhaling this works for me.

Anything that increases the carbon dioxide level in your blood/reduces the oxygen level will help. Breathing over and over into a paper bag will do it. Personally, I just breathe as shallowly and slowly as possible for as long as possible. I try to avoid taking any deep breaths, and I find that my hiccups will just disappear. Good luck!

I don't get continuous hiccups. I get one big one anywhere from 5-20 times a day. The nurse said it is normal and it could be gas trapped under my diaphragm.
