Question:
Can I eat recipes that contain brown sugar?

I have been going thru my recipes to see if I would be able to handle them now that I am post op. Many of them call for brown sugar, some 2 or 3 TBLS and of course other foods like meat or veggies. My question is can those recipes still be included in my new diet or am I going to dump on them? Splenda is a great substitute for white sugar, but is there a substitute for brown sugar? I am a long way off before I can have these foods because I am still on a blended diet and then I go to soft foods before I go back to regular foods. It will not be until the middle of July that I can eat regular foods again. Open RNY May 7, 2003 -30# so far.    — ChristineB (posted on June 8, 2003)

There is a brwon sugar substitute, I believe it is made by nutrasweet. I haven't tried it yet, but plan too as soon as I find out if I can make my own oatmeal raisin breakfast cookies.

Brown sugar is just white sugar with molasses added to it. It would cause the same problems as white sugar. I believe that Sweet n' Low makes a brown sugar substitute.

I hear that sugar-like makes a VERY good brown sugar substitute. Avoid sugar-twin though unless you like a bitter aftertaste

Sugar Twin makes a brown sugar substitute. I have tried it in a recipe and it was fine. It is hard to find, I looked at over 6-7 grocery stores before I found it. It shocked me because I finally found it at a small town County Market.

Everyone's taste buds are different, but I've had hideous luck with Brown Sugar-Twin.....YUCK! Very bad aftertaste to me. I use 1 C. of turbinado sugar with 3 Tbsp. of sugar-free maple syrup OR 1 tsp. maple or vanilla flavoring as a brown sugar substitute. It works for some things and not as well for others. I've done a TON of experimenting and you can visit my profile page or www.freewebs.com/recipes-after-rny for some sample recipes (the soft old-fashioned peanut butter cookies are divine!) and ordering information for the recipe book. Good luck to you.

I use Splenda and add a little molasses.
