Question:
I was wondering, just out of curiosity, what type of weight loss can I expect?

I know that there are no absolutes, but I was wondering what kind of range I can expect to lose by 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year. I just want an idea. Thanx!    — Janet C. (posted on November 13, 2001)

For the RNY. Within a year 70% to 80% of what your overweight by. So if your 100 pounds overweight 70 to 80 pounds gone on average. Although some loose it all. I was 313 preop, chart weight 185. 128 pounds overweight times 70% = 89.6 pounds. I am presently 223 down 90 pounds so I reached the 70% goal in just over 3 months and hope to eventually get to about 200 pounds.Men in genera loose faster than women, but everyone is different. This is all covered in barb thompsons great book about weight loss surgery.

My Surgeon says to expect to loose the first 60-70 lbs in the first 6 months. I had a BMI of 46 when I started I now have a BMI of 38 (yeah!!!!) I am almost 3 months out, Thursday will be 3 months and I have lost 63 already. Which is much more than I could have asked for. However I am now at my first plateau which really stinks....5 days and not loss....I hate that. Also...to answer the rest of your question of 1,3 6 months...everyone loses at a different pace so as long as you follow the plan and do your best to get your protein and water in youll do GREAT..Good luck

I am one of the slow losers but it is going off a little at a time and I have to be content with that. Everything has to do with age, metabolism and so on, so of course everyone loses differently. I had my surgery 14 weeks ago today and have lost 35 pounds so I have lost 30% of the hundred pounds I want to lose but is much slower pace than some.

I had openVBG on 06/11/01....46years old, 340lbs on surgery day. I've lost, at 5 months post-op, 101 lbs, which is over 50%, closer to 60% of my excess weight.

Hi Janet! I know that that averages are just that.. everyone loses differently. But on the front page if you click on "calculate your bmi" it will take you through a chart giving you guides on what you can expect from weight loss through WLS. Good luck!
